If you like the idea of an elderly Bride of Frankenstein running a very prim B&B above a hellmouth in Whitby and getting into funny, touching, fantasy scrapes with her bff elderly neighbour witch (and Panda), then this is for you. One of my favourite series of all times.

5. Those readers and these characters are still very dear to my heart. In a time when i don't even know if i'll publish anything ever again - it's good to remember Brenda. I just wish they could have been pushed a bit further into the mainstream. I just know that more people would have loved them.

4. or at other events with horror and scifi writers (some people can be quite amazingly rude!) but it was readers who always responded most strongly and warmly to Brenda and Effie. Especially women readers and gay men, who understood just what the series was all about.

Twenty years ago i was told (again and again by so-called genre experts and marketing and publishing people ) that you couldn't mix comedy with horror, or high camp and Gothic classics, or cosy mysteries and spooky goings on. Some people were very dismissive - to my face, at my own launch party!

2. Headline published six books in the series and they've been reprinted in recent years by Snow Books (but they can be tricky to get hold of - so you need to ask or order them in from your bookseller!) It's a series I'm very proud of.

1. Goodness..! it's exactly TWENTY YEARS since 'Never the Bride' was published by Headline. In some ways it's my most popular book, and Brenda and Effie and The Brenda and Effie Mysteries are the things that i get asked about the most.

this book has been published by Titan Books just this week. Edited by Marie O'Regan and Paul Kane, it features a whole bunch of writers riffing on images and characters from the Oz books.
