I make beer for a living and for fun. Middle aged ramblings on beer and domestic nonsense. I also grow stuff and keep chickens. Proud member of the Guardian-reading, tofu-eating Wokerati. With a side order of Huddersfield Town.
Dirty Martini made with my fermented green tomato brine. Dirty? It’s fucking filthy! Strangely delicious though.
Earlier today I got to grips with the grizzly end of keeping chickens. In related news, we’re having chicken stew tomorrow.
Probably as a result of summer being too hot, this year’s borlotti bean harvest is almost non-existent. Here it is in its entirety.
In the absence of The Real McEwen, this will have to suffice @devondympsy.bsky.social #ChampionsClub
I walked through Ashton-under-Lyne today. I’ve walked through some pretty grim places on my adventures over the last few years, and while not in the top five, Ashton is certainly up there in the list of places I wouldn’t like to live. Horden in County Durham currently sits top of the league.
I have vivid childhood memories of visiting “Auntie Lily” in these flats. To this day I have no idea who Auntie Lily actually was, although I do remember she wore a badly fitting wig and had no teeth.
Demolition of Holme Park Court, Berry Brow.
The famous (sort of) canal-straddling pylon at Stalybridge.
A sculpture of some sort in Stalybridge. Unfortunately the Buffet Bar isn’t open at this time.
Science and Media Museum. On the infrared camera I look like Wayne Rooney when he was Plymouth manager.
Whisky sours and Gardeners World. I know how to live!
And in The Crix we found a beer I’ve been waiting for! Hammond’s Prize Pale, brewed from a heritage recipe for the brilliant Beerhouses pubs. A beer I may have had something do with in a professional capacity.
We’ve made an apple cake with salted gin caramel to rescue some of the maggoty and squirrel nibbled fruit. No squirrels or maggots were harmed in the process.
A modest apple harvest this year because five of our six trees didn’t perform at all, and the fruit on the only one that did most are mostly ruined by codling moth larvae and squirrels. Oh well.
Nothing can ruin a good mood more than flicking on Radio 5 to hear “And next up is Patrick Kielty”.
It’s a beautiful day for apple harvest, although I’m sure that every single one will be damaged by codling moth larvae. I’m also seeing evidence of squirrel damage 😡
Now playing. A big improvement on the bloody awful Bronski Beat original.
Meanwhile on a group chat, we’re reminiscing about when Seabrooks used to be the best crisps in the kingdom. Who remembers these and which were your favourite?
Evenin’ all. I’ve finally pulled my finger out and brewed with some of the garden hops. An ESB at OG 1.060.
