Having coffee on my beautiful, plant-filled porch after a delicious breakfast. Temperature is comfortable, sky is clear, and the air quality is better. At this moment, I am perfectly happy.
There’s a nationwide blood shortage and I went in to donate today. I honestly got a little teary: my husband died of leukemia, but I’d been banned from donating because I’d studied in England and they were worried about Mad Cow. The rules are now changed. This is my first donation in 27 years.
Today, August 4, 2026, is the setting of Ray Bradbury’s short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” about a fully automated house continuing on after the family who lived there and the world around it died in a nuclear blast.
Well, I was not expecting to have to buy four new tires today, yet here we are. Not a great start to the week.
I have given my Boston fern a haircut. Not ideal timing (I should have done it in the spring), but I couldn’t stand the imbalance anymore. The result is giving me side swept Mohawk vibes.
Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino posted this video of the Oval Office and it somehow looks even more embarrassing than I realized
Went over and checked them out. Got a cool card and some stickers from Rachel of Rachel Allison Designs. Lots of great art at her booth.

Retreating once again to @sistersludge3.bsky.social to beat the heat. A friendly, independent coffee shop that will let you hang out for hours in the air conditioning for the price of a medium iced decaf Americano is worth its weight in gold. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I was watering flowers and my eyes suddenly focused on a spot four inches from my nose. Why, hello.
After seven hours of hard work, the portable air conditioner has lowered the temperature in my bedroom to 80 degrees. I wonder why I’m not sleeping well?
When my wife did chemo and radiation, she would go outside once or twice a day and shed the hair as it all fell out. Today, seven months later, we just found a nest a bird (likely a wren) made out of her hair.

Diversicon was wonderful! Thanks for the invitation to be one of the 2026 Guests of Honor. I had a great time.
The world may be falling to pieces, but at least my hair looks amazing.
This statistic from the article shocked me: “One in three Denver adults skips meals because they can’t afford it, according to a recent food insecurity survey report conducted by the city. Nearly half of those surveyed said they skip meals regularly.”
Denver, if you're free on Monday, a mountain of free spuds awaits:
Wow, there is a lot of talent in that community. These are adorable.
I need you all to know that the Berkeley Public Library has solicited submissions for a new mascot, and you can now vote for the contestants and I'm losing my mind. berkeleypublic-library.github.io/Fiber-Mascot...

It’s hot as the dickens in my house, so I went to DreamHaven Books and Comics and bought my copy of @naomikritzer.bsky.social’s Obstetrix and brought it into Sister Sludge Coffee Shop to read. The woman sitting on the couch across from me immediately brightened. “I LOVED that book!” she said.
