For our final activity at PIBI, a workshop on future directions. First @dr-liz-evans.bsky.social presents recent reflections in a Delphi process on where we need to go with research to understand body image experience and development in childhood.

Last talk session at PiBI on body perception! Akansha Naraindas of @qubelfastofficial.bsky.social starts by showing that body dissatisfaction correlates with reduced interoceptive body awareness and reduced sensitivity to changes in body-based distances (but not perceived passable-gap size) in VR.

Now up: our session focusing on #SocialMedia. Beth Daniels starts off talking about how appearance-linked social media behaviours are a risk for body image concerns in Albanian women - again more evidence that social media time itself isn't the problem, but specific behaviours create risk.

Fantastic 'cultural' session this morning - South Asian families and EDs in the UK, men as a distinct group within body/eating concerns, and the conflicting pressures on young women in Ankole, Uganda. Love to see time and time again the interest in (culturally adapted) media literacy education!

Now Helen Cervera gives the results of the pilot of a media literacy intervention in Colombian schools. Significant effects were found for body esteem, media literacy, and (for girls) appearance comparison. Pupils reported sharing what they'd learned with others and facilitators benefitted too!

In our 'Interventions' parallel session, Madison Vani starts us off with reviews of resources for parents to support their child's body image. Not so many available, often not age specific, not a lot of theory-based resources... Much work to be done! #BodyImage #DevelopmentalPsychology

Erin's talk was one of the ones I was most excited about and it didn't disappoint! Refreshing to hear a move away from negative lenses and how individuals were empowered by their disabilities. Really looking forward to more on appearance-functionality and reading this theme in more detail!

Joshua Francis shares a new scale of social comparison in development for children. Erin Vinoski Thomas analyses the content of #DisabledAndCute posts on social media. Lastly, Fidan Turk reports meta-analytic that social comparison is robustly associated with eating disorder symptoms.

Now starting our session on eating disorders @ #PiBI2025 Verity Pratt shows meta-analytic evidence that perfectionism explains c. 11% of variance in orthorexia in sport samples. Tugba Turkan shows that greater frequency of past dieting attempts predicted higher ED symptom scores.

PiBI Day 2 kicks off with an early morning session (for us!) with the Australians! Gemma Sharp gave an overview of the first 3/12 months of the CoRe-ED network; Lauren Conboy talked about the co-development of a digital body image programme; Cristian Di Gesto talked about post-partum body image;

'Where there could have been earlier intervention there could have been prevention' - opening session 3 at #PIBI2025, play therapists emphasise the need for more child-appropriate approaches to body image concerns at early stages in Emily Horton and co's amazing 4-person speed talk!

Session 1 of PiBI is underway - Ana Chamorro started us off talking about bidirectional marginalisation risks and beauty ideals for Wayuu indigenous women in Colombia. Megan Sutton presented detailed statistical analysis of multiple facets of body image. #PIBI2025
