![Amber: As you know, mosquitoes are a bit unpopular on account of being so irritating. Let's see what else we can learn!
SFX: BZEEE BZEEEE ZEEE
Amber: Excuse me, mosquito! Could you tell us about the blood-sucking thing you do? (Don't get too graphic)
Spinnerette: (But blood is great T.V.!)
Mosquito: Oh heavens, no! That frightful business is for the LADIES to brave. I am simply a mild-mannered male.
Mosquito: No blood, mmm but I DO so enjoy a sip of fine nectar... ooh or honeydew~
Amber: Oh, uh, sorry about that!
Mosquito: Nnnot to worry, my dear! ♥ Next time, you may recognize us gentleman by our glorious gossamer antennae. The fibers detect the sound of a female's sonorous wingbeats. Quite charming, don't you think? Ooh-hoo~ Shall I serenade your audience with our wonderful wing-song? It is MOST pleasing to any ear. Myes quite pleasing indeed! Ha-hah~
Amber: Um-
SFX: BBBZZZEEEEZZEEEEEBBZZEEEEE [filling entire background with this sound]
Mosquito: Lovely, no? I am rather proud of my unique drone.
Mosquito: The pitch is the key. A harmonious hum!
Mosquito: I've been practicing ever since I emerged from my pula form... about two days ago.
Mosquito: Anyway, let us take this moment to listen to- [cut off]
Spinnerette: I'm gonna eat this guy.
Amber: Not on camera.](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:j3b6guo6utjxdniqthziaz6q/bafkreifcxfsla6gxan72dpuh7bi5vup532wzk7izcy3cdg75al5cewmfa4)
![Spinnerette: Your tuuurn ♥ The big celebrity debut!!!
Amber: Aw shush!! (hehe)
Spinnerette: Recording... ...Now!
Amber: Hello! I'm Amber, a velvet ant!
Amber: Really more of a 'wingless wasp', (the males have wings) but ants are sorta wasps too... so I guess it doesn't matter?
Amber: We don't live in hives though. MOST wasps are solitary, bet'cha didn't know that!
[A chart shows a simple phylogenetic tree shows the evolutionary relationships between velvet ants, ants, bees, and other wasps. the base of the tree says "It's 'wasps' all the way down"]
Amber: We're "velvet" because we're sooo fluffy and cute and pretty~
Amber: But like a beautiful rose... look out! We have thorns! Well... stingers. (this time just for the females)
Amber: The stinger's mostly for laying eggs.
Spinnerette: You're some kind of parasite, right?
Amber: PARASITOID. We lay our eggs underground, on top of other bugs' larva. Then our baby eats the other baby.
Spinnerette: [Thinking] My face was too scary but this is alright??](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:j3b6guo6utjxdniqthziaz6q/bafkreicnodkt5qfidijok6duuifcp4k6rymmzehp7d55kzzwtywyevh5vq)
![Amber: Girl you like, NEVER go out! You spend all day cooped up in this dingy mulch hole.
Spinnerette: Uuhh YEAH??
Spinnerette: They don't call me a "brown RECLUSE" for nothing! I'm a loner!
Spinnerette: You know I only go out at night to HUNT. In the day I like safe, dark little nooks and crannies!
Amber: B-buh-but! I need you with me! What if the camera breaks?
Spinnerette: Find someone else to fix it.
Amber: C-can't you just hide under a blanket or something?
Spinnerette: Seriously? NO.
[Later...]
Spinnerette: You PROMISE I get to eat some of the guys we interview?
Amber: I'll tell 'em it's for a good cause! They'll understand.](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:j3b6guo6utjxdniqthziaz6q/bafkreicmdjnaqpxkpv72shekovhjpekm4yaf2ncvutbqzwb5qpq55pdx7u)
