A Great Blue Heron “toys” with his catch — a young frog in the water at the reedy river’s edge. I saw him toss, drop, and retrieve this frog at least 3 times. As he had just swallowed another — perhaps he was waiting for a little digestion to take place, or wondering if one more frog would make him too heavy to takeoff.

A Great Blue Heron dives headlong into the shallow, green, lily pad strewn river pursuing a frog (which he does catch). Most of his body is submerged, with only his upper legs, outstretched wings, and lower torso visible, but we can see the tremendous splash his long neck has made and perhaps a hint of the back of his head. I find this to be a comical image, but he shortly emerged with his supper - all in a days work for the great bird.

A Great Blue Heron adopts an unusual stance at the edge of a reedy portion of the river. She’s just swallowed a frog and has hunkered down to ingest it. She’s in the shade of the riverbank trees, on a fine mid July evening and the hunting and fishing are so good she hasn’t noticed me — I’m about 80 meters away.

A Painted Turtle lays her eggs at the top of the south bank of the Rivière aux Outardes in southwest Québec. If you look closely you will see the muddy depression she has made at her rear into which she is depositing her eggs with such concentration that my presence is immaterial to her. In any case I was using a long lens and stayed at least 7 meters away. This photo is from the later part of June.
