Comparing firesmoke.ca and map.purpleair.com at around 1:15 PM PT. Former uses wide-scale projections, latter uses ground-level sensors to measure absolute AQI. Yesterday, here in Metro Vancouver, quite a discrepancy as the smoke layer hovered over the city at 1500 feet and above. Today, agreement!

Bit of a disconnect between firesmoke.ca particulate projection levels and crowd-sourced PurpleAir ground level actual particulate levels. Both are around the same time this afternoon. Definitely a sharp gradient across the Fraser Valley.
Beautiful shot from METEOR M2-3 as it passed almost directly overhead for Metro Vancouver at 11 AM. Despite smoky conditions the spectral filters on the satellite "see" right through that wildfire smoke, even though the sun looked like you see here, a photo taken on this same date 9 years ago.

Who knew? Well, I didn't know that radiosondes, weather balloons, are launched from Vancouver Island. Here's the track of such a sonde. It was transmitting on 403 MHz. It may have been launched from Port Hardy. This shot shows its beacon was heard at Langley Airport.

Two shots from the METEOR twins, one at 11:45 AM, the other at 2:45 PM, from 137 MHz radio signal received from passes near Metro Vancouver. Particularly prominent is the wildfire scene in WA State where considerable damage has been done in the Spokane area.
Come Monday we may see somw wildfire smoke in the Fraser Valley and Metro Vancouver area, somwewhat like we had two weeks ago. Here's a prediction from firesmoke.ca for Monday noon.

Looks like another radiosonde (weather balloon) from Quillayute on the Olympic Peninsula in WA State came close to Metro Vancouver. I'm hoping one day to recover one of these balloons and the associated radio package by listening for their beacons on 404.6 MHz. @justingeographic.bsky.social
