Having a dusk walk along the walls of the Roman town of Calleva Atrebatum (Silchester) the town was built in the mid 1st century within an earlier Iron Age settlement, it was never built on after the end of Roman rule and its street grid can often be seen during a dry summer

One of the most fascinating periods of #Vindolanda was the Severan period when the stone fort was demolished and round houses built over the platform in groups of 10 back to back, Roman planning but Romano British in design. Excavation is revealing more of these structures.

The medieval stone robbers did a fairly comprehensive job removing the palatial Roman building currently being excavated at #Carlisle cricket club but this section of the southern wall is now seeing the light of day once again. The building dates to the early 3rd century.
