We developed a barcoded collection of 520 natural yeast isolates to screen 600+ compounds at population scale, uncovering how natural genetic variation shapes chemical responses. Most of my at-home fermentation experiments are successful, this one is not :) It took me a looooot of time to get my hands on viable and pure Monascus from red yeast rice products. After inoculating to steamed rice, the Rhizopus-like and Aspergillus-like molds took over the slow-growing Monascus:

Low-level contamination confounds population genomic analysis and also phylogenomics in this example of #yeast #Saccharomyces. Very important: "Contamination rates differed however among sequencing centers: was high for 2 #Saccharomyces studies (2% or 15% of genomes)."

It is no surprise that contamination leads to incorrect conclusions in population genetics studies. @audreykward.bsky.social, @mcmomany.bsky.social, @dbensasson.bsky.social caution that even low-level contamination has a greater impact on analyses than expected. More in #G3journal: buff.ly/kYFXQfM
