We've just updated the mNIRS.org website. The go to page for all those interested in scientific activities/conferences/workshops in muscle Near Infrared Spectroscopy (mNIRS) Take a look at www.mnirs.org Join our community by signing up to the mailing list for infrequent but interesting posts!

mNIRS — muscle oxygenation conference

The home of the muscle near-infrared spectroscopy community: news, talks, standards and the international mNIRS conference.

An athlete sent me the link to this company. Both the name and the landing page suggest it measures lactate. You have to click a few links to learn it's NIRS! I don't know anything about the device, but the marketing is maximally deceiving. I wouldn't trust a company with this strategy! ❌

A screenshot from the landing page of Q-Lac, claiming "training load based on lactate"Another screenshot from the website. After clicking a few links you learn it's a NIRS device measuring SmO2

Muscle oxidative capacity analysis with #mnirs is monoexponential by consensus. But are there secondary drift kinetics hiding in the data and biasing results?🤔 No idea, but could 'slow-component' drift be related to hyperaemia + metabolic rate adjustments as seen here? Thoughts? #rstats

Two-panel figure showing near-infrered spectroscopy slopes collected during repeated occlusions for evaluation of muscle oxidative capacity, modelled as an exponential decay in deoxygenation rates (slopes) over time. Title: mNIRS OxCap Kinetics Analysis. Subplot titles: Monoexponential and Exponential-linear drift models. y-axis: HHb slope (μM/sec). x-axis: Occlusion Times (mm:ss) (time range 0-04:00). monoexp coefs: Trial 1 tau=19.3 sec, k=3.1 /min. Trial 2 tau=15.4 sec, k=3.9 /min. exp-linear drift coefs: Trial 1 tau=24.6 sec k=2.4 min⁻¹ texc=73.7 sec slope=0.0526 /min. Trial 2 tau=19.0 sec k=3.2 min⁻¹ texc=57.1 sec slope=0.0445 /min

My old institutional email is dead. If you read one of my papers and tried contacting me at the corresponding author address, it won't reach me. My master's ended last October. Now my email account has been deleted. If you want to reach me, there are still plenty of options (e.g. this platform)

Generally, I am an AI sceptic. But I'm totally impressed by Claude Code. Within a few days I vibe-coded my own fully functional app to control the Lode Cycling Ergometer. 😮 Including a Golden Cheetah like programming language to build step and ramps in hyperbolic and linear mode!

I made a #Shiny app about post hoc power and effect-size uncertainty. If you accept an observed effect, you also need to accept its uncertainty. The app shows how power wobbles when you consider the CI, not just the estimate. Embrace the #wobble #samplesize open.substack.com/pub/mzlotean...

Power is wobbly, and 80% might be more like 5%

A Shiny app for showing that power analysis based on an empirical effect-size estimate is only as stable as the estimate itself.

Turns out, AI is not useful at all for this. I gave Claude a rather neutral explanation of the problem. The first response was opposite to what I would've done. By simply asking a few questions, Claude switched positions and now recommends exactly what I would've done.

Dear stats people, I'm looking for textbooks or other resources on test design and analysis to establish validity & reliability. Any recommendations & repost appreciated. PS: we have to respond to a reviewer and I want to make sure we're doing the right thing. #rstats #stats #science #AcademicSky

Garmin & Whoop are betting on muscle oxygen monitoring. Before you trust a muscle battery score: SmO₂ varies ~6% day to day. That's more noise than you'd want. Check out the first post of my new blog series "Science Translated"👇

Measuring muscle oxygen saturation is coming to Garmin and Whoop. Before you trust them, here’s what the reliability data says.

“Scientific training” is everywhere in endurance sports. But what does it actually mean? In my first blog post, I argue that training cannot be scientific and the term often is used for marketing. Curious what you think: 🔗 perfsci2.com/posts/scient...

Scientific training: Concept, Misconception or Marketing? – PS²

Some coaches and athletes claim to follow “scientific training”. What does that actually mean and does it really exist? A critical perspective.
