(She/Her)🇨🇴🇬🇧 Hi! I’m Dominique, a philosopher (MA) and EFA/CIEP-trained editor providing substantive editing services to novelists worldwide. When I'm not editing, I'm working on my gothic horror novel, Ingénue 🥀 🔗 www.instagram.com/noumenon.edits

Off to the emergency room with my dad. He's usually a long-walks-up-a-steep-mountain type of person, but he hasn't stepped a foot out of the house today and says he's feeling weirdly fatigued. Hopefully all is ok... The worst part about growing up is watching your parents grow old.

Honestly, if readers come away from my book as confused as I am, then I'll consider the whole experiment a success 😂 Other than that, I'm happy for them to interpret the story any which way they please (and I hope it's more of a debate than something overly obvious). #PretendPanel #WritingCommunity

I'm writing Ingénue because I think it has the potential to become a really good story. There's also something about the main characters that I find... not fascinating per se... troubling in a good way? Disturbing? Incomprehensible? I should look away, I can't--don't want to look away. #Pretendpanel

I'd love to sit down and have a conversation with Sally Rooney! I admire her both as a writer (Normal People is one of my fav books) and as a person. I'd also very much enjoy sitting down with Toni Morrison. She's an extraordinary person and the author of a masterpiece, Beloved! #LitHodgepodge

FRIDAY FLIGHTS OF FANCY

[Graphic of a winged angel holding a book]

Prompt:
16 | You’re on the book tour of your dreams! You get to do an event with any living writer of your choice... AND any dead writer of your choice! Who are you sitting down with?

[Graphic of a talking crow]
Book tour events often involve other writers, either as moderators or conversation partners. I should very much like to speak with that Edgar Allan Poe... I’ve a question or two regarding certain choices he’s made.

Join tomorrow for Saturday Snap Judgments!

I'm not 100% sure about these, but here goes... The Antagonist: ENFP-T, The Campaigner? He's very similar to Lucifer from Milton's Paradise Lost. Ingénue (FMC): INFP-A, The Mediator? She mediates between past, present & future... Me: ENFP-A 😂 No wonder I like the antagonist. #Lithodgepodge

#LitHodgepodge 15 Personality typing systems are by nature limited but can provide a framework for self-reflection and understanding what drives your character and how they interact with the world. What's your OC’s MBTI/Enneagram type? How does it come into play? #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

THURSDAY THRIFTED THERAPY

[Graphic of an old-timey bearded man sitting and leaning his arm against a barrel with a tiny frog crawling up its side]

Prompt:
15 | Tell us your character’s Myers-Briggs or Enneagram type (yours too, if you want!). Which parts resonate most? Are there poignant ways in which we see those aspects of their personality affect the story?

[Graphic of a talking crow]
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and Enneagram are two common personality typing systems in pop psychology. The MBTI uses 16 categories based on extraversion/introversion, sensing intuition, thinking/feeling, and judging/perceiving. The Enneagram uses 9 types based on core motivations and fears.

My gothic horror WIP wouldn't be complete without the requisite isolated manor house. For a while, I thought about setting this house in Colombia and making my novel a tropical gothic, but I ultimately decided against it. That said, I've still included a big twist on the trope... 🤫 #Lithodgepodge

#LitHodgepodge 13 Archetypal settings tap into the built-in symbolism of recognizable spaces. There’s a cave? We might uncover hidden truths. A 24/7 diner in a mystery? Prime setting for info exchange. What’s an archetypal setting in your WIP? How do you use it? #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Prompt:
13 | Tell us about an archetypal setting in your WIP. What is it, and how does it function in the story? How do you utilize, and possibly subvert, expected patterns? Feel free to share a snip.

[Graphic of a talking crow]
Examples of archetypal settings range from the broadly symbolic, such as the maze, the garden, or the wasteland, to more genre-specific tropes, like the tavern in fantasy novels or the small town with a dark secret in thrillers.

🥀 Ingénue, FMC: A fascination with the unknown--curiosity. 🥀 Bo, Antagonist: A disregard for the rules/authority--mischief. 🥀 Me: All of the above 😂 + Generosity of spirit. #LitHodgepodge #WritingCommunity #WriteSky #WritingPrompts

MONDAYS WITH MARCEL

[Black & white picture of Marcel Proust, a man of the fin de siècle who had dark hair, sleepy eyes, and a dark mustache, sitting with his elbow propped on the back of his chair and looking pensive]

Prompt:
12 | Answer as one or each of your characters (as well as yourself, if you wish!):
What is the quality you most like in another person?

[Graphic of a talking crow]
The Proust Questionnaire is a set of questions popularized by French writer Marcel Proust. Victorians answered these questions in parlor games, and modern interviewers now often use them. They can also be a great character development tool!

Ah, this is an easy one. 😂 Honor is of absolutely no consequence to either the antagonist or protagonist of Ingénue. In fact, their mutual disregard for the rules endears them to each other. They'll happily lie, cheat, and steal to achieve their ends. #AwesomeCharacters #WriteSky #WritingCommunity

Like the FMC of Ingénue, I was summoned to a cruel elderly relative's mansion so that he could present me to "society." It was such a strange and unique experience, and it changed my outlook on the world so profoundly, that I've been writing this WIP ever since. #PretendPanel #WritingCommunity

I'll answer for my antagonist, our irascible old tyrant: 🪦 When ~ He wants to live forever. 🧠 Forget ~ Especially people. ⏳ Past ~ If he could rewind the clocks, he would. 💔 Never Show Emotions ~ He needs to be able to hide them from himself. #LitHodgepodge #WritingCommunity #WriteSky

THURSDAY THRIFTED THERAPY

[Graphic of an old-timey bearded man sitting and leaning his arm against a barrel with a tiny frog crawling up its side]

Prompt:
8 | Answer one (or more) of these “would you rather” questions as your character:
🪦 Would you rather know when or how you’re going to die?
🧠 Would you rather have a perfect memory or be able to forget anything you wanted at will?
⏳ Would you rather time travel to the past or future?
💔 Would you rather never be able to show emotions or never be able to hide them?

[Graphic of talking crow]
“Would you rather” is a classic icebreaker which I doubt requires explanation. Surely you’ve been asked at some point whether you would rather fight 100 duck-sized elephants or one elephant-sized duck? If you chose the latter, you are clearly unacquainted with very many ducks.

Well, he's a great person when he's not being perverse, so... That's a fundamental feature of his perversity: the goodness, the genuine empathy, kindness, and generosity he's capable of; the wicked pleasure he takes in knowing good and acting on its opposite. #WritingCommunity #AwesomeCharacters

Tell me about your #AwesomeCharacters Antagonist day! I think even the most evil villains have things people will connect to, either something big or small. What's something you think people will find relatable about your antagonist? #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

I love what Netflix did with this line in EoE: "I believe there are monsters born in this world to human parents. A monster is a variation from the accepted normal to a greater or less degree. But evil is not always apparent at first glance. It can come cloaked in beauty or goodness or power."

Netflix/Penguin cover of East of Eden by John Steinbeck featuring Cathy Ames played by Florence Pugh's face in side profile against an orange sky. Beneath her is a house on fire and the silhouette of two brothers.

The Damsel is a Trickster: My WIP's title and the FMC's nickname is "Ingénue," which is another way of saying "Damsel." She's gentle and unworldly, a true innocent. BUT she's also exceptionally cunning. She's a fox in sheep's clothing, she just doesn't know it yet! #LitHodgepodge #WritingCommunity

Archetypes are like character blueprints that represent something universal about the human experience. Examples include the rebellious hero, the benevolent ruler, the mentor, the wanderer, the reluctant warrior, the trickster, and the reclusive genius.
