The German-Japanese Winter School 2026 (Feb 14 – Mar 4) brought students to Japan for an inspiring academic and cultural exchange. From Tokyo to Sapporo, Morioka, Yamagata and Tsuruoka. The journey ended in Tokyo—leaving lasting memories, new friendships, and valuable insights.

From September 22 to October 2, our department hosted this year’s Summer School together with Yamagata University. Prof. Lopez and ten students from Japan explored Hannover, joined a workshop on Environmental Justice, and visited the Harz region, including Goslar and the Border Museum in Sorge.
In early September Physical Geography students joined a field excursion on “Green-Blue Landscapes of Central Germany,” exploring Leipzig’s urban development, floodplain forest, lignite mining, and urban greening, concluding with a visit to the Bastei in Saxon Switzerland. The Landscape System Analysis project in Northern Finnland took students from Hannover, Joensuu and Tartu to boreal and subarctic regions. There they collected data with UAVs, TLS, GNSS and vegetation surveys. The results will be analyzed during this winter semester.
