July 3, 1977: The first magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam on a live human patient was performed. MRI, identifies atoms by how they behave in a magnetic field, and is an extremely useful non-invasive method for imagining internal bodily structures and diagnosing disease.

July 11: On this day in 1711, Georg Wilhelm Richmann was born — a Baltic German physicist in Russia who made early advances in electricity and calorimetry. He died tragically in 1753 while conducting an experiment during a thunderstorm, reportedly struck by ball lightning.

Bayes' theorem is used to update the probability for a hypothesis as more evidence or information becomes available. Bayes' approach to probability was notably different from the frequentist approach, which dominated statistical methods at the time.
