Winchester Cathedral, Hampshire, dates from 1079; its Great West Window has a story. In the 1642 civil war Roundheads smashed the window, city citizens hid the broken glass under their floors for 20 years, it was then rebuilt into the kaleidoscopic patterns seen today. #history #photography d8249-vc

Why the amusing name? This wonderful pub in Falmouth, Cornwall, dates back to the mid 1700’s. The original name for Falmouth was Pennycomequick – an Anglicisation of the Celtic Pen-y-cwm-cuic “head of the creek”, referring to its position at the mouth of the River Fal. #photography a8834-ast1c

Rising through the trees Trelissick Water Tower at Feock in Cornwall was built in 1865. Its height (12-15 metres) was designed to provide high enough water pressure to fight fires at Trelissick House. It’s now a holiday cottage with four floors connected by a spiral staircase. #photography a8742c
