July 31, 1926: Rupert Neve, a British sound engineer who invented the equipment that made modern studio recording possible, is born in the town of Newton Abbott. Neve mixing consoles were used in the making of records by Fleetwood Mac, Nirana, the Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd, among others.

With a slight temporal wiggle, I've got 'colonial soldier in India' on one side and 'fighting at The Somme' on the other. Both died in my childhood, so I only have second-hand accounts. I wish I could talk to them about their experiences (though the latter was reportedly reluctant). [1/2]

I once had a query about declaring an overseas payment on which I'd been taxed in the country of origin. A year later I rang with a related query. The HMRC guy I spoke to each time remembered me and the case.

do the people who build HMRC's phone maze feel guilty about how much it routes you to a "we hung up without you ever talking to a person" end, or do they feel happy about that? once you fool the maze and speak to an actual HMRC person, they are smart and courteous and solve it in seconds, of course.
