Demon King Daughter is the biggest for me. We literally see Kyoka born, and there are several spans of time while she matures to 15. Now, once she hits 15, the story locks in, and the bulk of the plot happens there, but yes, we see Kyoka at baby, toddler, young-teen, mid-teen.🧵 #AwesomeCharacters

Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters Do your characters age noticeably during the time that you write them? Are there time skips or a long progression? Or are they mostly the same age the entire time you write them? Does aging affect the story? #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Good stuff! I don't have any TRUE inversions, no. I don't like that kind of villain dev. I usually frustrates me more than pays off. However, I do have characters reach development points that can seem like inversions when comparing their start and their end.🧵 #AugCharWork

August Character Workshop Day 2. #AugCharWork We are all but done here folks. This one is interesting. At least to me, or I wouldn't have left it this late. Just a heads up.

Living One, Vekulamek, and Mizrantir would be core components of the story, yes. All the concepts revolve around Living One as the 'protagonists' (not 'good'), and dealing with the other two as threats. Most concrete ideas focus on the First Chosen and her rise to power. #MythAugust

#MythAugust 30 You've been chatting about your fictional gods & religions all month, but how much do these things play a role in the story you're trying to tell? Is it just cool worldbuilding flavor, or is it essential to the plot & characters? Maybe all of the above?

#MythAugust prompt for Aug 30:
What role does the mythology play in your story? Is it crucial to your plot/characters, or just a cool background detail?

Background image features a classic painting of Thor wielding his hammer with lightning, about to smote his enemies.
Below the hashtag in small text it says "Presented by @professoremily.bsky.social."
At the bottom of the image in small text it says "Feel free to yap about a fantasy mythology you already have, or use these prompts to create a new one! Don't forget to interact with others :-)"

Cry Wolf is part of the To a Monster Bound series. I'd originally planned to have Silverwolf (book 2) releasing in Oct, but losing my job has indefinitely postponed any publishing. 🧵 #SumLuv

So...where's this going, #SumLuv ?? 🧡 What's next for you and your work? If you've been chatting about a WIP, what's the plan for it when it's finished? What's your next project? Are you waiting on any news? Will we stay like this forever? 🧡

Romance Writers Summer of Love #SumLuv @EllieYellu Day 30: Where's This Going? What's next for your work?

My unsatisfying answer: This kinda solves itself. I agree that the relationship is as unique and as important as the component characters, but I believe that naturally flows out as long as the characters themselves are authentic and properly developed.

Lizzie Blackwood@lizzieblackwood.bsky.social · yesterday

#SumLuv 29: My question to you all is this: Every relationship is a character unto itself. What sort of things do you do to make your relationships unique? How do you create a dynamic that feels distinct to these characters and their personalities/backgrounds?

Please buy my books! 💙📚🌈🤖🐺👹 I think you'll like them, and my YA is written to be enjoyable for adults, too! Demon King Daughter 1+2, modern slice-of-life with demons! NICEF is a space opera with mechs! Cry Wolf is a werewolf lesbian romance! All Purchase Options: pjccahill.carrd.co #booksky 📢📚

Depends on who you ask! My proofreader universally prefers my villains to everyone else in the book XD I fully admit my villains are a 'weakpoint' of my writing, and that the protagonists are more interesting in almost every way. 🧵 #AwesomeCharacters

One story at a time, 400 words a day Mon-Fri, weekends off for consistent recharge time. If I get in flow, I let more words happen, but 400 is the requirement. If I hit burn out, I take 2 weeks off. Finish a rough draft? 2 weeks off.

#SumLuv How do you remain consistent with your writing and posting schedule? I’ve been trying to get work done on Rock Gods, but a plot for a future idea has spawned in my brain and now both are fighting for dominance. (And not in the sexy way.)

Literally all of them. I adore my casts. To pick some fanfavs: Cry Wolf has Abby, the firecracker aro/ace, older black lady Sheriff who genuinely loves her town. NICEF has Latien, the rival ace that becomes Djilia's sister-in-arms. DKD has Seina, who absolutely could've been an MC in her own right.

your pal finn@attorneytrash.bsky.social · 2d ago

#SumLuv i would love to hear more about supporting cast!! do you have a favorite character outside your romantic interests? (feel free to reply or quote if you want to yell about them on main)

Specifically that 'too weird' part: Kyoka: really does love how blue Himari's hair is. She'd have to restrain herself from having a negative reaction if Himari dyed it. Taegen: finds Selene's scars along the edges of her prosthetics sexy. This would make Selene uncomfortable. 🧵

🍃sage nightmare owen 👻@sageowenwrites.bsky.social · 2d ago

29| #SumLuv What’s something your MC deeply loves about their love interest, but it’s maybe too weird for them to ever admit, or for you to put on the page? 👀

If the overall story is comedic, but it happens to rely on a romance arc to move the majority of the plot. I can do bits of humor, but true comedy is out of my wheelhouse, so this is just reader/audience perspective. And, yes, comedy can absolutely have a meaningful message.

Paisley Rose@paisley-rose.bsky.social · yesterday

I have a subgenre specific question for #SumLuv: At what point do you consider a romance to be a "romantic comedy"? How much humour does it need? Is it the type of humour? Can it still have heavier themes or does it need to stay lighthearted throughout? Can comedy say anything meaningful at all?

Apparently this is cringe now, but Eliza Bennett and Mr Darcy's complete arc is a perfect romance story for me. Their pride and prejudices screw them both over (Deservedly), and they both grow from it, and /try again/ once they realize they f@#$ed up.

#SumLuv What is the romantic relationship from existing media that informed your ultimate idea of a fictional couple? The pinnacle of romance, the cream of the crop? I have a few: - Morticia and Gomez Addams - Integra Hellsing and Alucard - renegade Shepard and Tali'Zorah vas Normandy

Honestly, I can't help it. I love romance. I have since I was pre-pubescent myself. The emotions and dynamics around romantic love have always fascinated me and given me joy. It's hard for me not to put romance into a story SOMEWHERE.

Artemis Quinn 🏳️‍⚧️🎨📚@vampireantihero.com · yesterday

#SumLuv Why do you write romance? What is important to you this genre, why specifically tell these types of stories? Someone asked me recently "why your genre" and it made me think long and hard about it. I answered in terms of dark fantasy and horror, but I'm curious what you all think about this?

Gentleness. There needs to be those quiet, intimate moments of care and kindness. Healing is included here, to my eye. If two characters can't be gentle together, I don't consider the dynamic healthy (and no, I don't mean ALWAYS gentle, just has to be there when it counts).

Gabe 🏳️‍⚧️🦇 | Eden Hollow Oct 9th!@theeldervampire.bsky.social · yesterday

#SumLuv What’s an integral element in your romance storylines? Something that MUST be there. Hurt/comfort? A rivalry? The “will they/won’t they???” I’ll go first: Healing. Whether from trauma or grief, I explore the rawness of that pain and the MCs learning how to heal/move forward together.

High emotional intelligence and communication. Generally, there's no reason NOT to go romantic if you're genuine friends, care about each other, and have the potential for sexual joy, too, so it's really about the characters, their context, and their needs. They each have to accept the other's truth

Ms. Ocampo Writes@msocampowrites.bsky.social · yesterday

#SumLuv So this week I worked on the 2nd book of my urban fantasy series. My question for y'all: How you do you write a friendship between two people from different genders without things getting romantic or sexual?

Kyoka/Himari: married superheroes, effectively XD Kiseki/Hasava: have ideas for a far-future story showing they're still happily together. How? Spoilers. Taegen/Selene: happy couple, eventually adopting several kids Stefan/Blaire: mutual-support, a few kids, active for Aroi Rights. 🧵

#SumLuv After HEA! Give us a sneak peek of your characters after their happily ever after. Could be them doing something mundane like shopping with their partner(s) or something big that sets up for a short story or sequel.

People with crushes are adorable, so long as they're also sincere and kind. Gentle pining and eagerness to be near someone is ever-green to me.

Zeke Caliban@zekecaliban.bsky.social · yesterday

#SumLuv What's the element that you find the most fun to write? Be as specific as you want! For me, I love including ace or aro characters as I think it really shakes up the dynamics. My ace side characters tend to be matchmakers, but an ace lead is a very fun dynamic. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity

Overall, I make sure the characters are receptive to possible relationships, maybe have a source of conflict (for sake of story), and trust that no one wants to be lonely. From there, I let the characters react authentically to each other, and it tends to work itself out.

Rhys Ackhurst@rhysackhurst.bsky.social · yesterday

How do you decide what makes your couple become a couple (or polycule/trio)? OR What was the pivotal moment in their relationship that they went from strangers/friends to lovers? #SumLuv

I write what I want to read, so generally my casts favor interests, preferences, and desires that align with or are comprehensible to me. Cute little gestures often get inspired by real events. My wife jokes that I owe her royalties for all the cute traits of hers that've trickled into my casts.

A.Collie ✨@fancymuffin.bsky.social · yesterday

#SumLuv Day 29! Question: Do you take inspiration from your own life when writing romance? (i.e. memories, past experiences, etc.) Do people in your life influence/inspire certain characters in your story?

Overall, I favor a slow, gentle realization that the other's presence helps them relax or find greater joy in things. It can kickstart from instant physical attraction, but that stressful excitement can't sustain a bond. It gets 'serious' when they realize they can be comfortable together.

Joharra Harper@joharraharper.bsky.social · yesterday

Day 29. Ask your own question! What makes your characters realize they have feelings? For me: Violet realizes when they get stuck at a hotel overnight. Scarlett realizes when she's jealous when Violet gets close to somebody else. #WritingCommunity. #SumLuv.

Kyoka Agency-deliberately passive. She wants to savor her family's joy, and is so powerful she could muffle their experiences. Ability to Act-all the ability in the world. She specifically restrains herself to let others live their lives. 🧵 #AugCharWork
