I feel like playing Dragon Hopper has unlocked a new appreciation for the first 3 Paper Mario games within me. Director Ryota Kawade just has such a magical touch that is so sincere in its appreciation of fairy tales/ cultural traditions. I hope he continues his supervision of Paper Mario.

I love the 3DS but man the Circle Pad hurts my thumb with extended use. What a weird little evolutionary link between Nintendo handheld d-pads and their analog sticks

I’ll have more fleshed out thoughts later but thus far I’m extremely impressed with Dragon Hopper. The controls are very tight and the overhead platforming is unbelievably polished. It feels so natural and makes incredible use of the stereoscopic 3D

Before the credits for these VB games are revealed here are my predictions as to who worked on them: - Dragon Hopper had a lot of the Intsys Panel de Pon team working on it and may even contain some Easter eggs or returning fairy characters

Manifesting ARMS 2. At $70. It will be a Generational Banger that will be slept on by general audiences but gives the Goods to ARMS’ hardcore freak community.

It’s interesting to think about how Nintendo operates now versus when Iwata was in charge. Iwata was truly unique as a CEO because he was just as qualified as a game designer and programmer as he was a manager and a business leader.

Yoshi is interesting as a Nintendo franchise because it seems like it was only really prioritized by EAD for the first two installments (Island and Story) and then afterward there was seemingly no big picture plan for the franchise beyond “make another one to serve some other purpose” occasionally

Got the new Yoshi! I will support Good-Feel forever, I love them and their games. They are worth supporting as one of the few true “auteur second party” devs Nintendo has left. They’ve been making Nintendo games for 18 years now!

When people say “I wish Nintendo made more new IPs” what they really mean is “I wish Nintendo made new IPs that appealed more to my tastes”. Stuff like Arms/ Ring Fit/ Astral Chain “doesn’t count” because they’re Weird or too this or that.

I wonder if we will ever see any music licensing for Nintendo’s music service. Soundtracks from games that aren’t 100% owned by them. If they gave Microsoft like 5 dollars they could probably get stuff like the Rare N64 OSTs.

If Banjo-Kazooie was revealed in the modern day the direct announcer would be like “IN THIS GAME, YOU CAN COLLECT COLLECTIBLES. AN EMOTIONAL, COZY JOURNEY AWAITS. JUMP, SWIM, AND SHIT EGGS WHEN BANJO-KAZOOIE FLIES ONTO THE NINTENDO SWITCH 2™️ SYSTEM”.

The Minute that I can play Rare’s Xbox to Xbox 360 lineup on my PC is the day I drop kick my Xbox One out the door. It WAS my Rare Replay box, but at this point I hate having to drag it out

Xbox announcing backwards compatibility for PC: “pleaseee don’t abandon our dogshit ecosystem in droves, have some crumbs.” I’d be surprised if there was even anyone left in that division after the layoffs.

The Disney layoff news is abysmal. That’s literally a company with infinite money damn near monopolistic control over all forms of entertainment. Still doing this bullshit.

Most N64 games would just paste this texture everywhere in greyscale with the tiling plainly visible. Rare used color very smartly to get around the N64’s tiny storage cache for textures. Most wouldn’t even notice it’s all the same texture here

Donkey Kong 64 makes extremely efficient usage of in-engine coloration to cut down on the number of textures. Entire vibrant and colorful areas are created at runtime from a single texture just by artfully tinting it.

The colorful cliffs in Jungle Japes are just a vertex coloration map being applied to a single 128x128 pixel texture.

In the latest update, Nintendo added Tomato Adventure, one of AlphaDream’s first and best games to the Japanese Nintendo Classics GBA service. Im happy to see it on here as another little piece of AlphaDream’s legacy that lives on :)

It’s really interesting thinking about the polarized reactions we tend to see online for Nintendo Directs without a clear broad crowd pleaser like a Smash Bros. Especially the way a decent chunk of them roll their eyes at JRPGS/ “anime games”

It’s gonna be really surreal seeing a new 3D model of Kiddy Kong soon. The last time we saw one was in the E3 2001 trailer for Donkey Kong Racing. 25 years ago.
