REVIEW: TELL ME WHERE IT HURTS Two years ago, Tayla Kenyon and Tee Pee Productions brought ‘Fluff’, their multi-award winning show about dementia, to Buxton Fringe. Where it promptly won another award. Now the same team is back at the Working Men’s Club with their next production, Tell Me Where It Hurts, a comedy drama about Chrissy, a woman suffering from pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder. On paper, this looks to be a harder sell than Fluff. Awareness of PMDD is minimal, despite nearly a million women in the UK alone suffering from the condition. But Tee Pee Productions have created a belter of a show that also just happens to highlight some fundamental issues. Chrissy is the roiling, pulsing heart of the story while the other two performers convincingly juggle the remaining roles between them. Chrissy’s story is compelling - and wearily familiar. It is a story of, not so much women’s invisibility, but their inaudibility. Chrissy is surrounded by pleasant people who say they want to help her but who somehow never really listen to her. Again and again and again. Whilst routed very much in Chrissy’s present, the play looks both backwards and forwards to illustrate this inaudibility and suggest the consequences that it has had before and may have again. And somehow, through all this, it is still very funny. The cast of three perform wonderfully, with the two supporting actors dancing nimbly around the focal point that is Chrissy. The clever production makes excellent use of the small space. Tell Me Where It Hurts is an enthralling show that will take you on a helluva ride. There are three more performances in Buxton before it goes to the Midlands. It’s a terrific way to round off this year’s Fringe. Don’t miss it.
