Presenting IMPACT results at the #PPA2026 including machine learning models and network analysis. Taking home message: Fractography is the key to understand BFT; not solely the trauma location

Innovative methods for understanding blunt force trauma patterns to assess conflicts in past times - IMPACT PI: Dr. Lukas Waltenberger, Center for Human Bioarchaeology and Paleogenetics, Vilnius University, MSCA grant no. 01200197, funding: EU Horizon2020
IMPACT is proceeding well: the forensic data collection is completed & over 3000 machine learning models were trained and tested to find the best one! Curious how to predict the trauma cause? Results will be presented soon at the conference of the Paleopathology Association in Berlin.
Sex estimation in human cremated remains is now easier, more objective and replicable. Check out this study and software
Check out our new paper, by Lukas Waltenberger and colleagues! journals.plos.org/plosone/arti...
It was a pleasure to organize a "trauma at the human skeleton" workshop in Weimar. Many interesting talks and hands-on case discussions.
Amazing workshop on skeletal trauma in Weimar (Germany) with interesting case study discussions and keynote lectures by Prof. @tonypollard.bsky.social and Dr. Eilin Jopp-van Well. @lukas-waltenberger.bsky.social presented first preliminary IMPACT results on cranial trauma patterns.
IMPACT will be also present at this workshop with first project results 🥳
Anyone interested in skeletal trauma? I am co-organizing a workshop on this topic mid-April in Weimar; abstract submission is extended until Sunday! More informations: gfa-anthropologie.de/appa-worksho... (english version as pdf)
IMPACT project is proceeding well with over 170 postmortem CT scans already analyzed and nearly 2000 recorded traumata in the database! Besides the regular data collection, there is also time to look at some prehistoric trauma cases from Lithuania: www.facebook.com/marijampoles...
