Though it is currently not as palpable as the heat, cold stress is also an important factor crops must adapt to 🧊 Our partners at ELGO in Greece investigated the response of wild beet relatives upon cold stress. Several accessions showed limited injury and strong recovery – a promising result! 🥳

Let it rain – or not 🌧️ Researchers at UNIPG set up open-field experiments for PRO-WILD where they impose drought stress by using a rain shelter, allowing them to screen for drought-tolerant varieties of wild beet 🌱 A new trial is currently underway - let's see how the wild beets will cope! ☀️

At the IWC2026 in Bologna, CREA scientists talked about the genetic diversity of wild emmer wheat. They showed their research in talks, workshops and during a visit to PRO-WILD field trials.🌾 Congratulations to Elisabetta on being awarded for her talk about a reference germplasm collection! 🎉

Last week, IfZ researchers were out in the field to gather planthoppers 🧺 A tricky task, but the team managed to collect over 2500! They are used in an experiment to study how wild beet relatives respond to syndrome “basses richesses” (SBR) 🌱 Hopefully, some exciting results will follow!

Syndrome “basses richesses” (SBR) increasingly affects sugar beet. Our PRO-WILD partners from IfZ look for resistant genotypes and use planthoppers to inoculate wild relatives of beet with disease-associated bacteria. 🌱🔎 They currently prepare for new glasshouse trials. Stay tuned for insights!
