Contact your state reps and ask them to vote "no" on @governor.ny.gov's terrible insurance proposal that will deny you rights to recovery without guaranteeing lower car insurance premiums. This is about maxing insurance industry profits, not helping you.

Uber has dumped $8 million into supporting @governor.ny.gov's controversial agenda to lower auto insurance rates at the expense of some crash victims. @emilylip.bsky.social explains: youtube.com/shorts/3VEZ1...

The Governor is right to want to crack down on fraud & staged crashes, but the other proposals shift the cost of lowering premiums on to the backs of victims and that is fundamentally unfair. Instead we should be reducing crashes & injuries by making streets safer 🧵

"The focus should be on reducing crash frequency and injury severity," said Peter Beadle, a personal injury lawyer in Queens who believes street redesigns and lower speed limits would do more to reduce auto insurance costs.

"This is about saving insurance companies money," he said.

Today I filed an action to prevent NYC from fulfilling Eric Adam's last ditch attack on cycling in the city by using a law made to make our streets safer from motor vehicles against #bikenyc. Meanwhile the City does very little to implement the true intent of Sammy's Law, which must be corrected.

But Peter Beadle, the lawyer for the New York Cycle Club, said that Adams had misapplied the law.

"It's unfortunate and absurd that this challenge is having to be brought by cycling groups because Mayor Adams chose to pervert the meaning of Sammy's Law and circumvent the city's own rule process," Beadle told Streetsblog.

Sammy's Law does not authorize the 15-mile-per-hour park speed limit, the club argues in court papers, because the law states that a 15-mph limit can only be applied to "motor vehicles" and only when done in conjunction with traffic-calming measures that reduce the "the negative effects of motor vehicle use, alter driver behavior and improve conditions for non-motorized street users such as ... bicyclists."

It is a perversion of Sammy's Law to use it more to punish #bikenyc in Central Park than to lower speed limits on motor vehicles throughout the City - which is the real purpose of the law in order to save lives. Disgraceful that the City has failed to properly implement the law.

"Everybody's at fault. Blame everybody," said Peter Beadle, a lawyer who represents cyclists who are victims of car crashes. "It's amazing [that neither the Council nor the mayor has acted] because we have been given a tool that would save lives, have all these external benefits and we are not doing it. It's the art of deflection."

When the state starts murdering people who already know how to organize mass demonstrations of solidarity, the state is gonna have a bigger problem on its hands. Besides being an ICU nurse, Alex was someone who loved the outdoors. His local bike shop is organizing unity ride/critical mass. 🚲💪🏾
