I took my Stream Biomonitoring class on a collection trip yesterday. I didn't get nearly enough photos but this is always my favorite day. Getting people stoked on aquatic insects gets me all jazzed up. #ColoradoMesaUniversity #freshwater #ecology #insects

🧪🧵 🪰 🐜🪲🐞🦗🐛🦋🪳🦟 How many species of insect are there? A seemingly simple question, but one that has been 'bugging' scientists for years. Our work out today suggests that there are millions more than we had previously expected. doi.org/10.1073/pnas... @gdfcf.bsky.social
Excited to share our paper in Ecology Letters @pzecology.bsky.social@jimjunker.bsky.social ker.bsky.social@wesnerlab.bsky.social! Using ~670,000 body sizes from stream food webs across North America, we show that warming does not necessarily favour smaller organisms, but depends on resource supply🌍🐟
🚨New paper led by @vojsavagjoni.bsky.social with @wesnerlab.bsky.social @jimjunker.bsky.social is out! 🧪🌎🌐 We analyzed over 670k body sizes in stream #foodWebs and found, contrary to theory, #SizeSpectra / #IndividualSizeDistributions do not become steeper in warmer temps, and become slightly ...1/2

My 4 year old found this in a stream while we were camping and screamed: "Look! Bug observations!" I couldn't be prouder. 🪲
The PZ Ecology lab will be at #2026SFS this week! I'm excited to have two undergraduate students presenting on different aspects of body size in stream communities. I have yet another talk on estimating parameters describing individual size distributions (size spectra). See y'all in Spokane!
Do you consider yourself to be an inclusive mentor to budding scientists? STREAM is looking for friendly faces to commit to serving as a Freshwater Friend (an ally) to first-time conference attendees at the #2026SFS Annual Meeting in Spokane! (1/5)
New research grant kickoff meeting at the Uni of N Texas. Excited to keep working on individual size distributions / size spectra with @jimjunker.bsky.social @wesnerlab.bsky.social and welcome @fakamagwuna.bsky.social to the team.
I was sure this must be the ocean, but apparently this is what a "real river" looks like. Excerpt from: Notes from a dessert dog's travels in New Orleans.
NOLA sightings. According to Seek, this is the caterpillar of a Gulf Coast Buck Moth *Hemileuca orleans*
Any myrmecologists out there that can tell me what's happening here? Seems like the whole colony is out, and most individuals are paired up with mandibles joined and antennae frantically dancing. Most appeared calm, but some pairs seemed aggressive, and I did see a few dead ones being carried out
It's always nice to know that famous, successful, obviously brilliant people struggle with self doubt and confidence, but reminder to practice positive self talk. You're probably harder on yourself than anyone else is. Work hard, do your best, & give yourself a break 😉 Also, happy birthday, Chuck.
Happy birthday to one of my favourite haters, Charles Darwin
@freshwaterscience.bsky.social any idea what the chances are of an extension on the abstract submission dates for the Spokane meeting are? Asking for a friend. Actually no, let's be honest, I'm asking for myself.

I guess we're using #2026SFS I think I get that wrong every year 😖
🧪 Very excited to learn that a recently graduated wundergrad from my lab got funding to present their research at #SFS2026 in Spokane in May! Watch this space to learn if/how Aq. macroinvertebrate 🦟 body size distributions ∆ in response to rapid environmental warming🌡️in mountain 🏔️ environments 🤠

Excited to launch the new improved Reproducible Code guide from @britishecologicalsociety.org @methodsinecoevol.bsky.social FREE online here! www.britishecologicalsociety.org//wp-content/... Amazing work by some very talented ECRs. We hope it’s useful!
"Zombie" paper finally got a decision of major revision! It's not across the finish line yet but I feel like this thing has been in the wings for YEARS at this point. 🤞 For a good second round 🤞
Pleased to announce that we are looking for a post-doc to join @wesnerlab.bsky.social to study the relationship between body size, temperature and nutrients in stream ecosystems. Position details can be found here: yourfuture.sdbor.edu/postings/45969 Happy to answer any questions!

Pseudoscorpions are small arachnids that are often overlooked. They prey on clothes moth larvae, carpet beetle larvae, booklice, ants, mites, and small flies. Pseudoscorpions will sometimes hitch rides to new locations on other insects. #Arachtober

I show the PBS "Serengeti Rules" documentary, which strongly features Jim Estes's research, to my intro class every semester. Sad to hear of his passing.
Jim was an incredible ecologist. I own several of his books, and cite his research reguarly. www.butlernature.com/2025/08/20/j...
🐙🌿 An awesome little insect I found recently in Montana. It's a mantidfly/mantisfly, which is neither a mantis nor a fly. It's in the family Mantispidae, order Neuroptera along with lacewings, antlions, and owlflies. I think this one is Dicromantispa sayi. Adults are predators, and larvae of some--
No views from today's trail run, but I scoped out the last unknown-to-me section for my next race #Ouray50. Just 21 more days to prep and rest before embarking on what is most likely going to be an absolute type 2 #sufferFest. Psyched.
I know I just shouldn't make movie references in my courses, but the absolute 🦗 response my R-coding class gave to my Zoolander "the files are in the computer" joke today was absolutely soul-crushing. #academicChatter #higherEd
