I don’t know what the Odyssey Discourse did to people, but for the past few days everyone on this site seems to have gotten all persnickety and crochety and weird. Is this the curse of some Greek god. Have we collectively offended Iris.
My paternal grandmother, and I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing because she was shady as hell about her past but also quite smugly content about maintaining the mystery, and I want to know what that was about.
Enough “what would you do on the commune questions” If you got sent back 100 years and were given your grandparent’s job, what are you doing?
I was raised by I’m Sorry I’ll Read That Again episodes as we drove up and down the East Coast, and thought “Jokendalan Billoddy” was a single name because of the speed Cleese reeled off the cast and crew. Also knew the word “gibbon” before “monkey”. G’night, Bill.

Adjoa Andoh. I think she’d make all of your voices really quirky when I’m winning imaginary arguments with you.
You suddenly get a narrator describing your life and there’s no way to turn it off - everyone can hear it. While shopping, at work, at home, with friends - the voice narrating your every move goes on. Who do you hope is the voice of this narrator?
My company budgeted for AI to transcribe interviews via a third-party company. The AI rejected them as “non-English language”. So did the offshore human translators. I ended up having to “translate” the whole batch. All Brits from “the North” and Scotland. I was much more expensive than AI.
what are some absurd work situations you can share? once i got called into a meeting i had nothing to do with because the consultant brought an engineer and no one in the room could understand him, so they asked me to translate. he was scouse. i translated from english to english.
After a prolonged Spy vs Spy battle with my very intelligent dog, who is able to suss out a pill in any form and under any deceptive culinary cover, we have finally had a breakthrough: Cat food. She will eat the pill if it’s hidden in cat-marketed fish paté. She has never met a cat.
I genuinely don’t understand what’s happening. States have consent laws about being recorded. I had to get permission for every user interview. Legal got jumpy if I forgot. So why is any of this suddenly okay when you’re recording someone’s conversation and feeding it to a random data center?

Look, if we’re clamoring for pure historical accuracy in the Odyssey, surely we all know who should have been cast as Helen.
Chicken Lady Dances on Stage
Alt: Chicken Lady from Canadian sketch comedy show Kids In The Hall Dances in a bar - well, sort of dances. It’s actually a clip of a person with a beakish prosthetic nose and a poof of white curly (downy?) hair jerking around a-rhythmically while wearing a white blouse and pink skirt. Feathers are flying, as they tend to do when she gets aroused. It’s all very disturbing.

I feel like this DST vs Standard Time would map to extrovert/introvert personalities. The extroverts are all campaigning for another hour of late-day sun to socialize. And the introverts are thinking “god no, it’s the only time of year when we get a break from you for the correct amount of time”.
The woods, the parking lot of that weird motel, the elementary school playgrounds, Friendly’s, the mall, the other mall, the mall across state lines, the park, after-school job, the other after-school job, the weekend job, open swim, the hill behind the historical house… We did have places to go.
I ask as always: What were these mythical "third places that previous generations had available to them?" The whole idea of "third places" is just so much Camelot mythmaking.
America’s 250th anniversary event being repurposed into a Christian Nationalist coerced mass baptism event SOUNDS unlikely, and yet…
Republicans love to kill their own voters
Soon, all execs will claim they made mistakes going all-in on AI, but that no one could have predicted the outcome based on knowledge at the time. Bullshit. We all told them what would happen, repeatedly and with data, and they said “stop telling me that, I like my version better”.
Okay. How do we expose RFK Jr to the history of Bath Spa. It’s a Roman thing, his crew loves Romans, right? And people drink the spa water medicinally - the sulfur smell is part of it. So surely getting him to convince the Admin to take Reflecting Pool water with their sauerkraut is doable. Right?
Is the delay because they’ve incorprated the name removal into a preview of the revival of the musical STOMP?
I want every CEO to spend part of each day getting a complaint scenario and calling their company’s customer service line to sort it. Because yesterday my retiree father spent 10 hours setting up internet, then got an email claiming he’d filed a cancellation request, and now is stuck in AI hell.
I enjoy telling people about how I got a concussion and weeks later ALSO “aced” this test, but the way in which I answered one of the questions actually uncovered some TBI damage (then verified in another test). So… they’re seeing more than just right and wrong, buddy.
FYI this is the test Trump is bragging about “acing” 4 times It’s a fucking embarrassment that his handlers are still letting him gloat about this like it’s some extreme act of intellect
Identify the Good Aunts* early and make the most of them. They’ll stick with you for the long haul. * all Good Aunts are Fun Aunts, in some degree. But not all Fun Aunts are Good Aunts. Categorize mindfully.

Colbert inheriting Space Ghost’s mantle, with Jack White as Zorak? Yes please. (Brak TBD)
Björk on Space Ghost Coast to Coast
Alt: Björk on Space Ghost Coast to Coast, an animated show where the host is a caped and cowled superhero with a manly jaw, blowhard personality, and captive mantis bandleader. Björk is being beamed in remotely, displayed on a floating TV above a chair where normal talk shows would seat a guest. Bjork says: “I… I enjoy talking to you” Space Ghost says: “Uh… Yes you do!”

Witch stuff. Wood-based witch stuff. Secretly. I’d probably die early (and possibly violently as part of some sort of community bonding exercise), but I wouldn’t fucking die in childbirth and I count that as a win. I’d die doing what I loved: unsettling people for vague, unnameable reasons.
If you lived in 1066, what would you do
Have we considered that the moral code of the US is also rapidly falling apart because all our morality professionals got laid off in the last 5 years and now its most recent version was coded by AI and vibes?
Seems like the big speech went well. And considering how the timeline’s gone so far, I look forward to the US Congress discovering and joining King Charles’ inherited cargo cult en masse!

It appears I was coincidentally offline for a very exciting two hours, and may I just say how pleased I am about that.
Hey @bsky.app - who’s doing the UX research and usability testing for new features over there? Is it the product team, or do you have a third party or separate department handling this stuff? (Genuine question from a UXer, not a gotcha.)
Having taken the day to consider it: I do not like the new photo carousel. The usability swiping concern hasn’t turned out to be an issue (mistakenly swiping R/L meaning down/up) but I loathe swiping to see what used to be tiled. I preferred four images and choosing to tap, versus swipe to tap.
I just introduced my niece and nephew to Strongbad, Trogdor, Charlie the Unicorn, and Badger Badger Snake and they are utterly charmed. They can’t believe this is what the internet used to be. They are nostalgic for it.
