In the final lines of Speechless, Bienstock says “it’s not just speech we’re losing — it’s conversation. The ability to speak across differences. That’s what’s at stake. So we better start talking again, before we forget how.” One of the biggest obstacles to conversation today is the dynamics of online discourse. Algorithms and time spent in echo chambers can fan the flames of disputes in the comment section. So, CBC has partnered with public broadcasters around the world to explore new ways of supporting citizen engagement and democratic discourse. The new Public Spaces Incubator (PSI) initiative intends to encourage accessible and meaningful online discussions of public interest — a space that’s meant to allow audiences to speak across differences, without toxicity or bullying. A PSI forum is a little different than your average comment section. Here’s how it works: Each user is asked to log in, and a guiding question anchors the conversation. The discussion aligns with shared community guidelines in order for healthy conversation to flourish. This approach is designed to prevent individual commenters from commandeering the space and offer a more honest snapshot of the range of perspectives therein. The platform makes use of AI moderation tools to help reduce the amount of work it can take to guide online conversations. But since we know that AI isn’t perfect, human oversight remains a key part of the moderation process.
