I read Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke. This book has been divisive. You're following Natalie who is a tradwife who puts her life on social media. Natalie also has a lot of secrets, then she gets thrown back in time. This book was interesting, on some things I wish it had dug deeper. ππ #booksky

Hey! I'm your friendly neighborhood librarian. I like books of all kinds, but especially horror books. Scary movies, cats, plants, cooking and witchy stuff. Hit me up if you need some good book recommendations. (She/Her) #Booksky.
I read This Is Not About Running by Mary Cain. This is Mary's memoir about her running career and how she almost made it to the Olympics, her lawsuit against Nike and everything in between. I learned a lot. However, it felt like maybe she needed some more distance before writing it.ππ #bookskyπ‘π
I read The Knight and the Moth by Rachel Gillig. This was fun! This is about Sybil who is kept in a cathedral with other girls who are diviners and can read dreams for people. A group of knights enter the cathedral and Sybil must turn to one for help as her sister start to disappear. ππ #booksky
I read Accumulation by Aimee Pokwatka. This is Tennessee who moves into her dream house with her husband and two children. Strange things start happening, she and her husband get caught in repetitive loops. This started strong for me but felt like it wasn't worth it by the end. ππ #booksky π©Έπ
I read London Falling: A Mysterious Death in a Gilded City and a Family's Search for Truth by Patrick Radden Keefe. This was incredible, Keefe is one of my favorite nonfiction authors. A meticulously researched dive into London's criminal underworld and a family's search for truth. ππ #bookskyπ‘π
I read Addiction by Design: Machine Gambling in Las Vegas by Natasha Dow Schull. This is a look into casinos, psychology, design and it was fascinating. Schull interviews not only gamblers but game designers, employees, ceos and I really appreciated the 360 approach. ππ #booksky ππ‘ #nonfiction
I read Strange Pictures by Uketsu. This is a translated Japanese mystery that I read for horror book club. You're reading vignettes with a picture at the beginning of each chapter and trying to solve it. I felt like the ending was satisfying but I don't read a lot of mysteries. ππ #booksky π©Έπ
I read The Caretaker by Marcus Kliewer and I really enjoyed it! This one seems to be divisive. Macy takes a job caretaking for an old house for three days, competitive pay, as long as she follows the rites she'll be fine...this is haunting, creepy, a nod to OCD and it stuck with me. ππ #booksky π©Έπ
I read The Stepford Wives by Ira Levin. This was excellent! I'd seen the 2004 movie but that was it. The book follows Joanna and her husband Walter as they move to Stepford. It's idyllic but something is off about the community. Creeping dread, claustrophobia, highly recommend! ππ #booksky π©Έπ
I read The Valley of Vengeful Ghosts by Kim Fu, this one didn't work for me. I think some of that was marketing, I was expecting a haunted house book and this was more of a slow burn fever dream about working through grief. Eleanor buys a house after her mother's death, also ghosts ππ #booksky π©Έπ
I read Molka by Monika Kim. This was good but check trigger warnings. Molka is the Korean term for hidden spy cameras. This follows Dahye, her whirlwind relationship with a playboy, her coworker who installs cameras in the ladies bathrooms at work, female rage, revenge and ghosts. ππ #booksky π©Έπ
I read Spoiled Milk by Avery Curran. This is set in a girls boarding school in 1928. Violet dies suddenly and Emily is convinced of foul play. She convinces her friends to seek answers in the occult. However strange things begin happening. Gothic, sapphic this was fun! Slow burn. ππ #booksky π©Έπ
I read Why We Talk Funny: The Real Story Behind Our Accents by Valerie Fridland. This was an interesting look at accents, etymology, history. I do wish it had dug a little deeper at some points but I still enjoyed it. I read this on audio which was fun because of the pronunciations. ππ #booksky π‘π
I read the Burial Tide by Neil Sharpson. This was excellent! Irish folklore horror which is new to me. A woman crawls out of a grave on the coast of Ireland and can't remember her memories. Mara is desperately trying to figure out what happened but not everyone is glad she is back. ππ #booksky π©Έπ
I read Daughters of the Bamboo Grove: From China to America, a True Story of Abduction, Adoption and Separated Twins by Barbara Demick. This is a non fiction about the one child policy in China, the families it affected and one family's struggle to reunite. Narrative non fiction. ππ #booksky π‘π
I read Trad Wife by Saratoga Schaefer, this was so much fun! This follows Camille who posts pictures of her trad wife life but realizes she needs a baby. She makes a wish in a well behind their house and is willing to get her baby by any means necessary. Feminist, gory, satisfying. ππ #booksky π©Έπ
I read Japanese Gothic by Kylie Lee Baker and I loved it! Duel timeline 2026 and 1877 Japan. Lee is fleeing New York where he killed his roommate to Japan to his dad's new house, Sen a young samurai hiding with her family. A door bridges the gap between the worlds. Haunting and odd. ππ #booksky π©Έπ
I read Nothing Tastes as Good by Luke Dumas. Emmett weighs over 300 pounds, desperate to change he tries a new weight loss drug: Obexity. And it works! But he's having odd cravings, losing time, and police reports of dead bodies. This was fun but the MC and pacing didn't work for me. ππ #bookskyπ©Έπ
I read True Grit by Charles Portis for book club. Written in 1968 and set in 1870s this is a western that follows 14 yr old Mattie Ross who hires a US Marshal and joins him on a quest to take down the man who murdered her father. Mattie is tough and brave, I can see why people like it. ππ #booksky
I read Wolf Worm by T. Kingfisher. Historical southern gothic horror. In 1899 Sonia is a illustrator who gets hired by Dr. Halder to illustrate his collection of insects in North Carolina. Atmospheric and creepy, but be ready for LOTS of bug talk. The pacing didn't quite work for me.ππ #booksky π©Έπ
I read Wake Now in the Fire: A Graphic Novel by Jarrett Dapier. This was based on a true story about high schoolers in Chicago that worked together to overturn a system wide book ban of Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis. The art style in this is great and I liked the POVs, worth reading! ππ #booksky
I read Nowhere Burning by Catriona Ward. This follows Riley and her brother Oliver- who flee to Nowhere House with other children, but there is a price to pay. This is multiple POV, mystery and twists, ghosts. I loved the beginning but got bogged down by pacing and all the POVs. ππ #booksky π©Έπ
I read On Sundays She Picked Flowers by Yah-Yah Scholfield. This is a southern gothic set in Georgia. Jude flees to a haunted house to escape her violent home life. The storytelling is beautiful in this, the descriptions. The pacing was a bit tricky for me as was the magical realism. ππ #booksky π©Έπ
I read Fly, Wild Swans: My Mother, Myself and China by Jung Chang. This is Chang's second book about her life growing up in communist China. This tells how she left China in 1978 for college and her relationship with her family back home. Wild Swans is Chang's first book. ππ #booksky π‘π Both good!
I read Half His Age by Jennette McCurdy. There were parts of this I liked and parts that didn't work for me. Waldo is 17 when she starts an affair with her 40 yr old married English teacher. It wasn't the shock value it was the characters and the pacing. But I like her narrative voice. ππ #booksky
I read Brawler by Lauren Groff. This is her second short story collection, her first one being Florida, which I loved. Brawler focuses on the light and dark within people and the choices they make. Some stories I liked more than others, but I'd still say this one is worth a read. ππ #booksky
I read Snake-Eater by T. Kingfisher. This was one of the coziest horror books I've read in awhile. Selena runs to her aunt's house in a tiny desert town to flee a bad relationship. Her aunt has died but she can stay. This has old gods, found family, it is funny. I highly recommend! #booksky ππ π©Έπ
I read Superfan by Jenny Tinghui Zhang. This was good, not what I was expecting. We follow Minnie-college freshman who is obsessed with the Kpop band HOURglass and finds community online. But we also follow Halo who is in the boyband. Parasocial relationships, two POV, obsession. #booksky ππ
I read House of Splinters by Laura Purcell, it was so good! This is a prequel to The Silent Companions but I ended up loving it just as much. This is a gothic return to the haunted Bridge estate set in 1774. English countryside, haunted mansion, complicated family, class struggles. #booksky ππ π©Έπ
I read The Red Winter by Cameron Sullivan and this was quite the fantasy romp. Sebastian and Sarmodel defeated the beast of Gevaudan but 20 years later it has come back. This is historical fiction, dark fantasy and I really enjoyed it! Drags a little in the middle but definitely read it. #booksky ππ
