Prior to spring these boys had never been off a leash, let alone a small housing estate with only a fenced grass area circled by concrete path being their only area to play. It’s a joy to watch them run together, freedom of space encouraging the best in them, as open spaces do us all! #TheCampfire

Limpets nestle in to ‘home scars’ during low tide; depressions are made in the rock from their repeated return to the same spot each time. Small coral and crinoid fossils also etched on surface of limestone. #RockinTuesday #TidesOutTuesday #EastCoastKin #ECK #PhotographersOfBlueSky #Photography

A family of six limpets of varying sizes attach to rocks surface in intertidal zone. One is obviously larger than the others leaving me to wonder if they are members of the same family, it’s a nice thought!
Lower half of limestone shows crinoid and coral, possibly worm burrow fossils.
These guys use homing behaviour to return to the same ‘home scar’ each low tide.

Honeycomb worm reefs, and various seaweeds adorn layered bedrock formed by layers of sandstone and shale, laid down millions of years before, an ever-moving ripple in the earths surface now folded into this magnificent habitat of life. Tide recedes, in distant high cliffs, most likely containing a fossil here and there demonstrate the shift of seas levels over millennia.

Folklore says fairies use wide hollyhock blossoms to sleep inside, and the seed pods are known as ‘fairy cheese’.

Ancient Egyptians placed hollyhock wreaths in burial tombs to help guide the dead into a new life.

Old European herbalists used its soothing sap for coughs and sore throats.

17 Apr 2021 visit to Piwhane / Spirits Bay. From the wiki: “The bay is considered a sacred place in Māori culture as according to local legend, it is the location where spirits of the dead gather to depart from this world to travel to their ancestral home (or afterlife) from a large old pōhutukawa tree above the bay.” Looking inward from near the water’s edge, one is presented with quite the view. In the distance, Maungapiko Hill quietly shoulders a dark robe of verdant forest. A blue sky carries fluffy clouds. A pristine white sand beach holds a weathered, vantablack-like volcanic rock in its broad palm. The winds off the Pacific must have been particularly strong as one can see the path left behind by the rock as it moved over the sand. According to the photo’s timestamp, it’s 3.25pm. Yes, let’s linger, for there’s just a bit of stronger daylight the trek back to the faraway car park. In the here and now, I just asked myself if I remembered picking up this rock to feel the weight and texture. Immediately I knew I hadn’t (which is highly unusual for me, an avid rockhound). That’d be right, though, as one of the names of this highly-sacred locale is “Kapowairua” – “catch the spirit”. I came to commune with Spirit, to walk softly, to speak with me and mine.

Inspired by the various prompts and sitting with this photo, I ruminate upon our impermanence. A volcano that is now a rock, and one day will be a pebble, as only time and tide can do. Humbled, I wrote:

Centre stage the honeycomb worm builds intricate protective tubes from shell fragments that remain long after the worm has gone, and becomes a supporting land base for gutweed.

In the tide pool itself at the forefront of the image is tooth or serrated wrack, a flat olive green to golden colour and we can also see some more flat wrack intermingled.

Bright green sea lettuce floats delicately in the centre of the tide pool providing shelter for all sorts of marine life amongst and below it.

Possibly some young bright yellow-green channeled wrack surrounded by vivid-green sea lettuce. Light green-brown coral weed with a feather-like appearance grows along the tide pools water line.

Above the pools surface grows some sort of beach lichen and the rock is beautifully mineral stained in a rust-red colour.

Centre focus orange and red flowers budding and in bloom form an arch. Background is out of focus but bottom of image one of the flowers blade like leaves can be seen.

Captured in the image was a quiet stillness where the hummingbird moth settled on some ivy. Only the brown and black colours can be seen, the beautiful orange colour visible in flight out of sight. I sometimes call these ‘Fairy’ moths as the first time I saw one… I thought I’d seen Tinkerbell erratically hovering around my head.

There is a technical term for this cloud formation but I am sticking with candyfloss sky 😂Photo taken this morning here in Glastonbury. I also put the drone up a bit later so those photos still to follow. It's a long time since I have seen a sky quite that vivid.
