Shock as at least 1 in 5 children now need glasses - is social contagion to explain for the rise in testing? I Went To Specsavers, said I couldn't see the letters even though I could and they just gave me special lenses. I tried them on and now I have a headache. What are we doing to our kids?

Pretty much everything scared me as a child, but we were shown Watership Down at school when I was about 5 or 6...
In honor of scary media month: what is the first piece of media you remember truly frightening you as a child?
There are good and bad books of all genres (including lit fic), and yes, some are more demanding than others, but can we please ditch the "guilty pleasure" idea unless you're talking about something actively harmful! Literary fiction is neither innately morally superior nor necessarily more skilful
I'm not opposed at all to guilty pleasure reading. I do it a lot. I just don't understand the desire to say there's no meaningful difference between, like, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, and Dungeon Crawler Carl, because after all you might like both.
Open to all who've worked with UK publishers, not just UK-based translators!

ah yes I love seeing all these men in my timeline agreeing with each other about the “lesser” nature of romance novels yes yes snobbery is good they say, don’t these silly silly women realize that their silly little formulaic books could just as well be written by machines

Unsurprising news to many freelancers But companies underestimate how long it can take to properly 'clean' AI slop into something useable, and it can often take longer than creating something from scratch
Freelancers are getting buried with ‘soulless’ AI slop cleanup: ‘It’s a shame we need to do it’
As more companies turn to AI, they’re hiring freelancers to clean up its mistakes rather than create original work

Hearing a few reports from authors that One Drive has been deleting their documents. I say again: DO NOT SAVE YOUR DOCUMENTS ON ONE DRIVE. TURN IT OFF. SAVE IT LOCALLY OR ON AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE. DO NOT RELY ON CLOUDS OWNED BY COMPANIES THAT SCRAPE YOUR DATA FOR AI.
Unsolicited writing advice, no. 2256: After reposting that article, I feel I ought to explain a few things about writers and promotion. 1. The publishing industry exists primarily to make money from selling books: and in spite of what you've heard, it's making rather a lot of it.
The Hotel Manager's Guide to Murder in its Icelandic and English versions. The publisher in Iceland decided to use the same cover design (by Kid Ethic) as the UK paperback.
My #ReadTheWorld project is going well and I have researched options for most of the world’s countries but I’ve made my task harder by wanting to read from every US state/Canadian province. Can anyone point me to a resource to help me identify books for these prompts? 💙📚 #BookSky
Optimist: the cup is half full Pessimist: the cup is half empty Other translator: the cup would normally be a glass in British English, is it ok if we change it?
Optimist: the cup is half full Pessimist: the cup is half empty Translator: cup? beaker? mug? teacup? bowl? Hand-made or mass-produced? Traditional or modern? Large or small? With or without a saucer? Handles? What is it half full or half empty of? Clear? Brown? Hot? Cold? With or without milk?
See also: this is not only a book, it is a book I am translating. I therefore do actually need to read all the words!
I think the worst AI prompt pushed on me right now is in Adobe: "This appears to be a long document. Save time by reading a summary using AI Assistant." My DUDE, this is a book! The length is part of the enjoyment! I DO NOT want any summarisation of its perfect, human words!
For some reason, this has been running around in my head since last night. Substitute the gender neutral "hack" for man. allpoetry.com/poem/1185551...
Epigram: British Journalist by Humbert Wolfe
You cannot hope to bribe or twist (thank God!) the British journalist. But, seeing what the man will do unbribed, there's no occasion to.

So, Sophie Irwin has written "an official Georgette Heyer". But the name on the cover is Sophie Irwin. And with v few exceptions, Heyer didn't have regular characters. And writing consistently in sb else's voice is *hard*. And I have so many questions. And why does publishing keep *doing* this? (💰)
