AnalitikJena rep gave me a ship date of March 19 back in March (ordered last week of February). I received one in April. I have been trying to get an update from Fisher Sci on shipment of the other five for three weeks. It's getting ridiculous!

UVP handheld UV lamps have been discontinued... I need six more for my teaching lab. Any one has suggestions of alternatives? I realistically only 254 nm since this is for TLC visualization. #chemchat

Today I was contacted by the cooperative education people saying I needed to change my interview schedule because they need to be a minimum of 20 minutes long (I selected 15) and then I'd need to change the day because it would overrun the 4:30pm latest end. Anyway, this is the unwritten curriculum.

I started organic chemistry research at 17 yo without knowing what methane was. Ask my former PI how much my post-internship presentation was a humiliation ritual because it was extremely difficult to communicate to others who were lacking the basics.

Part 2 of the New Yorker series on higher ed is up; it’s an interview with someone who has even weirder and less good ideas than Jay Caspian King (the author / interviewer). For example: rhere’s no meaningful experience at the edge of chemistry without knowing some (and probably a lot of) chemistry.

would think there's still value in her understanding the basic theories and foundations of, say, chemistry. Even if A.I. knows all of that, she should probably know it, too, if she wants to understand what those edges of knowledge are, no? So, in my ideal vision of the academy, you're going to be in class with a mentor who isn't going to have to teach you Chemistry 101 but will want to quickly move to where the edges are, to do something new. Maybe they would decide together to 3-D-print some new material that has never been printed before, or what have you. Whatever they decide together will not be something every university is going to be able to do.
