At a time when the average new vehicle costs $49,220, Slate is pitching something that has become increasingly rare in the modern auto market: a genuinely basic new vehicle that doesn’t look that way. Read more from @rani.bsky.social: www.theverge.com/transportati...
Tag teaming tech with @rani.bsky.social was my favorite part of this job. Learned so much from her, still in awe of Rani’s hustle
Truly grateful for my time at Sherwood, where I worked with some of the best writers & editors in the business. It was a great ride and I'm proud of the innovative journalism we created. Taking a break to enjoy the summer but would love to hear about good fits for the fall. bsky.app/profile/wsj....

Robinhood Markets will lay off about 10% of its workforce, representing roughly 290 jobs, aiming to cut costs and work more efficiently.
Unfortunately my role was eliminated as part of these layoffs. Very proud of the work I did at Sherwood covering Big Tech and AI. Absolutely killer team of journalists that I loved working with. A thread of some of my favorite pieces...

Billionaires, apropos of nothing: ”Trillionaires shouldn't exist!"
my recording of earnings calls involves a lot of sighing and uttering “for fuck’s sake”
I’ll be happy when I can ask Siri when it’s going to rain today and it says something besides, “yes, there’s a high chance of rain today”
New Siri called Siri AI and not Sirai. HUGE missed opportunity.
George Santos called me after my story revealing federal investigations into his suspected market manipulation on Kalshi. And he said: "This story is going to get you a gun in your face." Then he lied about it. www.npr.org/2026/06/04/n...
I wrote about George Santos. Then he made a violent threat and lied about it
NPR reported on new federal investigations examining the former Congressman's bets on the prediction market site Kalshi. Then he threatened the NPR reporter who broke the story.

Tesla currently has exactly 42 unsupervised robotaxis on the road in Texas (its only active state). It turns out the answer to life, the universe, and everything is also the exact size of Elon Musk's autonomous empire. sherwood.news/tech/tesla-h...
Tesla has just 42 unsupervised Robotaxis on the road in Texas. Alphabet’s Waymo has 577.
That is much smaller than Tesla’s Elon Musk had originally forecast....

Salesforce has been doing video earnings calls that are part podcast, part infomercial. I blame the extra space in the Salesforce Tower.

listening to Google IO and absolutely no one is booing AI...out of touch!
Is the AI coming up with the names for new Google products now?
Here @rani.bsky.social captures my exact feelings after riding around in a bunch of robotaxis in the Bay Area recently. It is up there among first encounters with a new technology for me. Crazy how far we have come since the first DARPA Grand Challenge in 2004. sherwood.news/tech/robotax...
I hated the idea of robotaxis, but they actually rule
San Franciscans have gotten used to seeing cars without drivers crisscrossing their city. It will be the reality for the rest of us soon....

Mostly agree but I think this doesn't address key practical questions. Self-driving taxis are not charging what they'd need to to be profitable, and if they did, they'd currently not be competitive. Also bad weather remains a critical unsolved problem (and bad weather is when people want taxis).
It pains me to say this but...robotaxis are good sherwood.news/tech/robotax...
