I actually pay for The Athletic (but at one of their cut-rate deal levels) and I do like a lot of their coverage. But holy crap is that article about athletes not winning on social media a horrible take that they should just delete right now. So bad I'm not going to give them clicks by linking it.

I first started collecting referee data way back in 2009. I needed something to focus my energy on in what was a time of terrible grief. Now, for the first time, we've finally got a website going where all this work I've done can be seen by all. Introducting mlsrefstats.org

Here was his full answer to the promotion-relegation question:
If P&R is not good -- why is he investing in European leagues? All of that money could be in American soccer .. but is not. Why not? Why is P&R good there .. not here? I'm actually neutral on the question -- but if he invests in European soccer ....??
Ah, Larry Berg gets the promotion/relegation question. He invokes his experience investing in European leagues. "I can understand the appeal for the fan. ... I don't think it's appropriate for our league. Don has said never say never, but I don't see it any time soon."
The definitive angle for the San Diego game is up. it covers the VAR on reviewing of Cannon committed a foul or not. PRO agrees with the decision for VAR to send it down but does not say it agreed with the ref's decision not to call the PK. Read what you will there. proreferees.com/2026/08/01/2...

This is a bad take. Of course you sell Herrington when a $17M+$6M+15% offer hits the table. Just like of course you sell Bombito when you get a almost $8M offer. The problem is the reinvestment of those funds has been horrible. Plus selling Djordje was stupid.
Colorado Rapids done it again (sold their best player and ensured they’ll miss the playoffs for another year)
Not as big as the rumored $29M yesterday, but the sell-on clause is huge if Herrington continues on his trajectory. Rapids will get $3M in GAM and about $12M in cash out of this up front. (Got to pay back the $1M we spent to get him then the league takes 5%, plus the Roar gets training comp.)
🇦🇺💣 BREAKING: Hull City has reached a verbal agreement to sign Australia int'l defender Lucas Herrington for a deal worth up to $23m, per sources. - $17m (!) fixed fee - $6m add-ons - 15% sell-on clause of any profit - Deal not done, but just formalities www.nytimes.com/athletic/748...
Rafa tied Spencer for 5th on the Rapids all-time scoring list tonight. His next goal will move him into a tie with Diego Rubio for 4th. The next goal after that will move him into a three-way tie with Omar Cummings and Paul Bravo for 2nd. He'll then need 11 more goals to tie Conor Casey for 1st.
Its now been more than 10 years since the Rapids went this long in a season without scoring more than 1 goal in a game
We think the solution here is Keegan and Alex Harris? SMH
Even if the Rapids find a winner in the last 10 minutes plus stoppage its tough to take much confidence out of this one. One of the worst defenses in the league and we're struggling to score. Given our position in the table you have to think a draw ends any hope and 1-0 win doesn't give much.
@sickosfc.bsky.social @burgundywave.bsky.social I think that Minoungou shot deserves an 'absolute chimneys'

Rudy Galetti reporting Herrington to Hull for £21.5 mill plus a 15% sell-on. Almost $29 mill plus a sell on clause. Can't see how the Rapids say no. And if he's ever sold on from Hull, he will be the highest net transfer fee in MLS history. Jhon Duran was ~$30 mill all in for Chicago Fire.
If the Herrington deal gets done at 20 million pounds (or more) its the kind of move that could redefine the Rapids and their future. Its the chance they've been looking for to reboot the club and put it on a new path. The problem is, we all know they won't. Especially with Padraig in charge.
The F-5E in the rearview mirror may be closer than it appears.

If Herrington doesn’t start tonight that’s a strong indicator that the Hull City transfer is likely a go. (Him starting doesn’t rule it out, just means it’s further from completion and/or has a loan back clause)

Great, lets all not vote because we're just assuming Trump is going to start a civil war that somehow only applies in certain states but not, say, letting the CA or IL or NY governor turn every district in the state blue. God damn doomers.
Laws haven’t stopped the Pedo Protection Party. Trump writes an XO saying state legislatures must select winners, not the people. Governor doesn’t certify votes, legislatures select winners, Governor certifies those winners. Lawsuits go to SCOTUS who says Elections Clause and ignores.

Colorado Rapids Superdraft pick Mitchell Baker recently gained his Indonesian citizenship, and scored a hat trick on his debut with the national team. He'll be with Georgetown for another fall campaign.
🇫🇷🟣 Sources: The Colorado Rapids are finalizing a deal to sign French attacking midfielder Youssef Maziz. Maziz, 28, a free agent after leaving OH Leuven. TAM signing, key attacker who can complement Paxten Aaronson well. Primarily a chance creator, a priority for the Rapids this summer.
RMSJ can confirm @tombogert.bsky.social's report that the Colorado Rapids are finalizing a deal to sign Youssef Maziz from Belgian Pro League's OH Leuven. As reported, free agent TAM signing. Matt Wells said earlier this month the team is looking to bring in TWO attackers this window.

The last time the Rapids went 9 games in a row in the same season without scoring more than 1, the first game was Mastroeni's last game in charge. The team went 10 games over the 2022 (3) and 2023 (7) seasons. They went 12 games in the spring of 2015 never scoring more than 1.
Obviously the red card plays a huge part in it, but the last 170+ minutes of Rapids soccer isn't going to attract any new fans post World Cup. This has been dire.
