I bet if you told, say, the ancient Greeks that actually lead is really toxic and then told them we also invented/discovered something way more dangerous called radiation, and then you told them lead protects you from radiation they'd be like OH COME ON

I'm gonna do some little deep dive threads into the Unruh effect and quantum field theory in general. I want to try convert the maths into words for max accessibility but also try avoid making it sound too vague and fanciful. Probably super easy to do. Anyway follow if this sounds cool to you! 🧪

The Unruh effect is a prediction in quantum field theory that an accelerating thermometer in empty space without any other contribution to its temperature, will record a non-zero temperature, just from its acceleration, due to quantum vacuum fluctuations. 🧪

Hopefully I don't get sued for reproducing this but it really is one of the most informative bits of text about quantum mechanics I have come across, from Carroll's 'An Introduction to General Relativity'. 🧪

Screenshot of text: "Strictly speaking, quantum mechanics is just different from classical mechanics; it is by no means necessary to start with a classical model and “quantize” it. Nevertheless, we usually do exactly that. Even for simple classical models, there is more than one way to construct a quantized version; these include canonical quantization and path-integral quantization, as well as more exotic procedures. What is worse, there is no simple map between classical and quantum theories; there are classical theories with no well-defined quantum counterpart, classical theories with multiple quantum versions, and quantum theories without any classical analogue"

This spacetime diagram morphing is a mathematical picture of viewing events in spacetime from different inertial frames of reference. Here we see how events that occur simultaneously in one inertial frame (on a line parallel to the x-axis) do not necessarily happen simultaneously in another 🧪

Particle physics is like, red flimflams emit floopydoops and become gigglepops, blue flimflams emit floopydoops and become red flimflams. Charlie Browns can emit other Charlie Browns and form Charlie chains. Chumbawambas are responsible for the expansion of the universe 🧪

In what sense does the Higgs field give particles mass? The standard model of particle physics is actually complete without Higgs, if all the particles moved at the speed of light. But only massless particles can move at light speed 🧪

Trying to understand new maths concepts in science usually feels like it boils down to 'which numbers do I plug in where and how do I know if the numbers that come out are bigger or smaller than they should be'

Why can't I travel at just 1% lightspeed in this futuristic year of 2025? Then I could travel to the opposite side of the globe in less than 7 seconds. Seriously who wants to run the calculations? 🧪 It would make visiting my parents so much easier.
