Implicit learning; statistical learning; consciousness Currently working on how we form conscious representations of complex regularities https://www.cogpsylab.ro/cover

So, that's the proposed pattern: "The Humorous Hill" (obvious nod to a certain valley). things are funny when they match an overall pattern or template but get the details wrong, and learning systems tend to get the overall pattern before the details

Occurs to me that we’re at the end of an ultimately very anomalous century-long evidentiary golden age during which it was extremely easy to produce an accurate visual/auditory record of reality, and relatively difficult to produce a false one.

In a large in-lab study, conducted over 6 semesters, we tried to independently replicate this finding and obtained the opposite pattern — abrupt implicit and piecemeal explicit evaluation change. In a modified (methodologically improved) paradigm, both types of evaluation shifted abruptly.

A plot showing abrupt implicit and incremental explicit evaluation change in response to 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 counterattitudinal statements.

I am biased, yet I encourage you to have a look there. Congrats particularly to @alexandradia.bsky.social who wonderfully conducted this piece of work last year! This study highlights that within-session alpha modulation by EEG-neurofeedback may rely on non-specific, time-dependent mechanisms.

New paper in Imaging Neuroscience by Jacob Maaz, Arnaud Rey, et al: Non-specific increase in alpha power during a neurofeedback session targeting its downregulation doi.org/10.1162/IMAG...

Absolutely - every layer of a feedforward neural network is (disregarding the stuff you mentioned) linearly related to the previous layer. However, multiple stacked linear layers can together perform nonlinear functions. So I'm saying that a "module" is a stack which does nonlinear stuff...
