July 4 fireworks on a scale no human can match! Poor seeing conditions and incoming clouds led to a video with artifacts and jitter. Still interesting to see the activity! I'll post better videos from earlier in the week in separate posts. 🧪

Just to remind us how BIG the universe is...how many GALAXIES can you find in this image? This region is called Markarian's Chain after Benjamin Markarian who noticed in the 1960's that about 7 of the galaxies seem to move together. There are more than 7 in this photo! 🧪

IC 405, the "Flaming Star Nebula" in Auriga. This is about 1500 light years away. The central star AE Aurigae that lights up the nebula is a variable star. It's also a runaway star. That means it's just passing through the nebula at a relatively high velocity (still a very long time!)🧪

Today's sun. Only one sunspot, but there's activity that we can see at the H-alpha wavelength, including some nice prominences. 🧪

This region in Auriga is a busy part of the sky! The middle with the wavy thread extending below is IC417, the "Spider Nebula" about 10 million years old at 7100 light years from earth. The upper right is IC410, "The Tadpole Nebula", 10,000-12,000 light years away. Click to zoom and see details. 🧪

Two takes on the Jellyfish Nebula, a supernova remnant in Gemini about 5000 light years away. The supernova that created this may have happened around 30,000 years ago. Estimated at 70 light years in size. Compare that to our solar system, which is 0.5 to 1.5 light years in size. Click to enlarge.🧪

Between the moon on one side and clouds on the other, I couldn't get much data on deep space objects last night. If all you have is the moon, you take pictures of the moon. 🧪
