I think it would be really interesting if more smart non-mathematicians somehow got a real understanding of what mathematical thinking is, independent of the technical details of any particular area of math

Actually, it would be very interesting to get a group of smart non-mathematicians together with an LLM and a library of literature on some long-abandoned mathematical program and see how well they could revitalize it

Don't anthropomorphize fictional characters. They're not real people and it's a category error to talk about them having thoughts or feelings or motivations. They just do whatever the author writes!

This is a good point. There is math, real math, useful important math with new ideas, that is still kinda incremental. And then there's math like Grothendieck did it - math where it's not even realizing you're asking the wrong question - it's inventing a new language to ask the right question in.

ok. Look. Let's acknowledge that the goal has been scored. I'm not trying to move the goalpost. The ball has gone past it. Great. Now, it does make sense to start wondering about some new goalposts. Not all unsolved math problems are equally hard; not all solutions are equally important.

Don’t you *LIKE* understanding the magic of the machine? You do realize hand-transistor-sizing in VLSI (I hate that I even have to specify hand now) is fun…right?
