Bonjour/Hello. Associate professor at the Université de Saint-Boniface (Treaty 1, Winnipeg, Canada). Adjunct faculty at the McGill School of Continuing Studies. Researcher of the multilingual social internet. I also run. A lot.

I'm so ecstatic that people are using AI to generate asinine content while #Manitoba burns...Don't get me wrong, I love a little #BrainRot myself, but remember no planet, no memes-just sayin'. We're fully capable of creating memes & creative content without planet-killing, job-killing tech. #MBpoli

Canada is already in it with big fires and evacs in the thousands. The country looks poised to have large fires on the landscape from now until the snows come. That means Canadian resources will be overextended and not available to help others. Also, probably leads to smoke drifting into the US.

Fire danger map of Canada with a large swath of extreme danger along the provinces closest to the US. Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec all have a majority of their area marked as extreme, but the largest fires right now are in Saskatchewan.

Doing my weekly round-up of tech news and am catching up on the unveiling of Altman's/World's Orb. Apparently, influencers attended the event and @kevinroose.com & @caseynewton.bsky.social described them as "orbfluencers" on the latest Hard Fork. Had a soblaugh. More here: shorturl.at/h8o6N

Welp. Couldn't help myself: I wrote a few words on "woke research" on LinkedIn. I hope to have demonstrated that linguistic justice & demolinguistic data can be helpful for more than "the libs" (however you want to define the latter). Curious to read? Head on over: www.linkedin.com/posts/activi...

What are your thoughts on the absence of robust AI policy/costing in the Conservatives' costed platform? Intentional omission? If so, hypotheses? I wrote about my thoughts with a link to a G&M article on LinkedIn (will share) and would love to hear others'? shorturl.at/NrUch #CdnPoli
