Leading a team of 30+ people by day. Making my dream game by... whenever I get a chance. 🤷 23+ years of indie gamedev. 34+ years of winging life one day at a time. https://beacons.ai/redchu

I managed to work on the game for an hour tonight (an usual time block) and decided to implement an extremely basic combat system which consists simply of clicking the mouse to make your baguette-looking sword appear and damage a platypus-looking placeholder enemy. #godotengine #gamedev #indiedev

Here's a video I made today showcasing progress and giving a sneak peek at my project. There's still lots to do, but with how little I've been able to sit and work on it I'm actually quite happy with how far along the little mohawk capsule dude has come. 🥹 #gamedev #indiedev #indiegame

It's been a stressful week or two. For a visit from corporate at the store I manage. Hopefully now that it's all over tomorrow I can start working on my game dev projects again. I couldn't put much energy into anything else but work this week. 😭

Last night, my girlfriend told me she wanted to make a game. I got on the laptop and started making a test scene with a house built using CSG in Godot Engine 4.7. Let me tell you, the new vertex snapping feature is a game changer for level design. It is freaking phenomenal. #gamedev #indiedev

I let another person play test my prototype and it was even more insightful than the first: new bugs uncovered, new gameplay mechanics and ideas from feedback + observations... I was worried I'd lose interest once I let people play, but now I'm just ready to make it better. #gamedev #indiedev

I got hit with sickness Wednesday evening after watching the first play test of my game, so I decided to take time to recuperate instead of working on it more. I only get between 3 to 5 hours each week to work on it, so it's hard to not feel like I'm setting myself back a bit. #gamedev #indiedev

Yesterday was the first private play test of my WIP game. It did not go as expected due to bugs that I thought I fixed prior to exporting it, so I'll have to look into that. Regardless, I got some good feedback just from observing and am excited to do another play test soon! #gamedev #indiedev

This morning I added a new area to and... lots of trees. Tomorrow morning I'll be putting in some collectibles, another NPC, more dialogue, and placeholder SFX/music for the July 1st private playtest. I'm so freaking excited to let people play this, even if it's barely anything. #gamedev #indiedev

Early screenshot of a colorful low poly world. A small player character overlooks a lush forest, a quiet village, and the ocean from a grassy hill. The scene features bright, stylized trees, a minimalist interface, and a cozy, adventurous atmosphere.

I've come to the realization that younger me didn't care about how I did things as long as it worked, and today me tries to make everything perfect based on what I think future me will need. The problem with this is that I don't make any progress outside of building systems. #gamedev #indiedev

This upcoming Wednesday July 1st is the target for the first "not me" play test. I'm nervous. I never let others play my projects, especially not when they're so bare bones and ugly as this one. It's been a strange development cycle for me to not make things perfect. #gamedev #indiedev

I wasn't feeling what I was going to work on today, so I added trees to the world and closed off some open spots from the initial rough design phase. 🤷 I also got system messages working so I don't have to print to console. A lot is planned for tomorrow. 👀 #gamedev #indiedev #screenshotsaturday

I'm surprising myself with how much I'm getting done in such a short amount of time by focusing on making things functional now instead of trying to make the perfect, scalable system right off the bat. Currently adding stretch goals to my plan of having a playtest by July 1st. 👀 #gamedev #indiedev

I have a basic opening area for my project now, but I have to keep telling myself this is a prototype and not the finished product. There's a lot of things I want to go back and polish, but if I do I risk losing momentum to get my core game loop built first. It's a struggle. 👀 #gamedev #indiedev

A month today I started my Godot project, working on it the mornings of my days off. Progress has been slow but steady. l've been ignoring my desire for perfection and focusing on making it functional before polishing. It's been pretty rewarding seeing it come together. #gamedev #indiedev

After about an hour and a half of work, I have a rough, walkable layout for the "start" my project. It ain't pretty... but it's something that actually makes me feel like this is going to turn into the game I want it to be, and that in itself is beautiful enough for me right now. #gamedev #indiedev

"To make a game, all you need is a blank piece of paper and a few big ideas." Words from a making-of Spyro the Dragon video that have stuck with me for years... obviously there's a lot more to it than that, but at least pen and paper is accessible when I'm not at my computer. 🤷 #gamedev #indiedev

I'm actually pretty excited to see a new Spyro game being released next year. Spyro is the reason I make games today... it's nice to get a new entry, and hopefully one that sticks true to the original trilogy. 👀

It's no secret I struggle with staying focused and on track. Since I can't do any actually dev work on my project today, I decided to build a Trello roadmap to help keep me in line to maximize progress with each session. 👀 We'll see if it works lol #indiedev #gamedev

Screenshot of a mobile Trello project board for a game development project currently codenamed "Vibrant." The board uses a green and black theme and is organized into workflow columns. One task, "Build Home," is currently in the "Doing" column, while numerous future tasks remain in the "To Do" column. The image highlights the project's development roadmap and progress tracking without revealing specific upcoming features or plans.

I managed to sneak in just under 2 hours of work on my game this morning. I avoided doing any coding or tweaking things and just focused on making an actual playable environment to capture the feeling I'm going for... this is what I came up with. It's ugly, but it works. 🤷‍♂️ #indiedev #gamedev #godot

After today's 30 minute session, I now have a nice little playground for capsule mohawk dude to run and jump around in. Next will be getting the gravity to feel more like what I'm going for. This is starting to feel like the game I'm trying to make with each session. 👀 #indiegame #gamedev

The screenshot shows a colorful early 3D game prototype environment with a small orange capsule-shaped character with a blue mohawk standing on a purple checker-pattern ramp. The scene includes a large green checkerboard ground plane, a row of red cylindrical obstacles, bright blue sky lighting, and simple graybox geometry used for movement and jumping tests in a stylized indie game prototype.

Finally starting to feel a little better after whatever disease attacked my sinuses this week. Unfortunately, life continues to be incredibly hostile toward the "come home and work on your game dev project" lifestyle I'm trying. 😭 Still plotting it out in my head all day, though. #indiedev

I didn't do much gamedev this evening as I'm fighting off a crud, but we did get some new pots for our herbs. There's something weirdly satisfying about growing things... whether it's plants or weird little capsule mohawk dudes in Godot. 🤷 It's been a productive day at least. #indiedev #gardening

three grayish-brown plastic whiskey barrel planters arranged around a tree wrapped in string lights in the middle of a yard. the planters are filled with fresh soil and newly planted herbs, with warm evening sunlight hitting the grass and giving the whole scene a calm cozy vibe after a long day.

if there's one thing i've rebuilt 47 times, it's a third-person controller 😭 this time I'm focusing less on perfecting systems and more on crafting something that feels good. mohawk capsule dude can now run around the grassy planes with an orbiting camera. that's progress. 👀 #gamedev #indiedev

early Godot prototype screenshot showing a tiny orange capsule dude with a blue mohawk standing in a huge flat grassy world under a bright blue sky. very simple and unfinished placeholder visuals, but he can now run around with a third-person orbit camera. 👀

I think one of the biggest challenges in gamedev as an adult is preserving momentum when life starts throwing responsibilities, exhaustion, and other randomness at you every day. 💀 I'm still thinking about my little prototype mohawk capsule dude today at work, tho. priorities #gamedev #indiedev
