Coming up tomorrow, a new bycatch conference from the #JointWebinarsonFisheriesBycatch. Our colleagues from CIBBRiNA will present the outcomes of a dedicated workshop on evaluation and integration of multiple effort-related data sources to quantifying fishing effort and assessing #bycatch of ETPs.
In today´s #JointWebinarsonFisheriesBycatch Marta Caballero (Univ. de Girona)will explain the value of integrating genomic and phenotypic data and how this approach can be applied for management ETPs bycatch in the Mediterranean and Macaronesian regions Acces: teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-joi...
Happy #WorldOceanDay! REDUCE continues to study megafauna species and interaction with fisheries in the Central Eastern Atlantic: gathering new knowledge on species ecology and analysing how #bycatch occurs. Research for healthy seas and thriving sustainable fisheries.
#MSPglobal joined forces with #REDUCE project to advance shared action and knowledge on marine spatial planning in West Africa. This is some of the outcomes of our participation at the 12th PRCM Regional Marine and Coastal Forum in Nouakchott last April. www.mspglobal2030.org/mspglobal-re...
Last Friday we learnt from Lola Riesgo (CSIC-IEO) about the methodology developd for modelling probabilitay areas of occurrance of #bycatch of Mobulidae in the Tropical Atlantic, whether at the species level or the population level, and how the results can be applied for management purposes.
Remind our new #JointWebinarsonFisheriesBycatch today, by Lola Riesgo (CSIC-IEO) within the #MarineBeaconprojectproject!
The next session in the #JointWebinarsonFisheriesBycatch series takes place this Friday featuring our colleagues from the #MarineBeaconproject: “Spatiotemporal patterns of Mobulidae in the Tropical Atlantic: A unified modelling approach”, by Lola Riesgo (CSIC-IEO). Acces: lnkd.in/d-yBai5a

In the last webinar on #FisheriesBycatch we learned about the work being carried out by Catchwise #MarineGuardian with AI to reduce bycatch and improve fishing efficiency, through a decision support tool for skippers built on live fishing activity, historical catch data and oceanographic conditions
Ministers and government representatives from West African countries have adopted the #NouakchottDeclaration, marking an important milestone for sustainable ocean governance in the region. 📄Download the Nouakchott hashtag#Declaration below in the next comment 👇

We´re happy to announce the "International Forum on Bycatch of Marine Megafauna" ( #IFBMM) to be held in Galicia, Spain, in 2027. We’re jointly-organizing the IFBMM along with: ECO-CATCH, MarineGuardian, @marinebeacon.bsky.social ,SEA4Future, LIFE PROMETHEUS and @cibbrina.bsky.social
REDUCE also celebrated the #WorldMigratoryBirdDay2026. Seabirds ecology research in East Central Atlantic Ocean makes a substantial part of our project. We ara studying the ecologic routes, breedingt and nesting zones of several species, as well as the interactions with fisheries in the region.
New post on Manx shearwaters (Puffinus puffinus canariensis) ecology by our colleagues from the Seabird Ecology Lab (UB) are carrying out in La Palma (Canary Islands). This campaign is partially supported by #REDUCE and is shedding light on the species’ potential nesting areas in the island.

"Some mysteries don’t disappear—they evolve. What began as a search for presence has now become a quest for proof. In 2026, we returned to La Palma to take the next step..."

Last Friday we visited the training vessel INTERMARES in its base in Ferrol (Galicia, Spain) within the framework of the #REDUCE-BYC_Workshop to be held in Dakar in Nov. 2026: "Reducing marine megafauna bycatch in Northwest African fisheries: advancing monitoring, mitigation and sustainability”
#FOMACO REDUCE project delegation has been very active all these days, making presentations, working meetings and networking with key actors in the region to explore more and more diverse collaborations that, for sure, will enrich the final outcome of the project.
#FOMACO 2026 has just finished today with the closing ceremony by SE. Messouda Baham Mohamed Laghdaf Minister of the Environment and Sustainable Development of Mauritania.
#FOMACO Day 4.The Forum is finishing today and, before the Closing ceremony, the Plenary Leaders Conference has taken place under the title "Looking to the future: From commitment to large-scale impact for sustainable development in West Africa".
Our #REDUCE #FOMACO event on "Marine Spatial Planning in West Africa: Sharing Knowledge, Sharing Action", moderatated by Gill Ainsworth (USC) has been delivered this Wednesdaday, resulting in a productive session with good attendance of expert researchers and representatives from public institutions
The second day of FOMACO concluded with our second Side Event: "Electronic Monitoring: opportunities for West Africa fisheries". Our colleagues from UC and DATAFISH showed the technical dimensions of electronic observation and outlined the ongoing development of electronic monitoring in fisheries.
We have had a fruitful session introducing the project REDUCE and actions being implemenmted. Thanks to all those attending the event and for the useful discussion on why #bycatch happens in West Africa waters, how fishers address it and how to advance in best practices and mitigation measures.
Second day of #FOMACO with lots of relevant sessions happening- REDUCE is delivering two Side Events today: SE19-Reducing marine megafauna bycatch: the collaborative approach of the REDUCE project in the East Central Atlantic and SE20-Electronic Monitoring opportunities for West African fisheries.
The first day of the PRCM forum (#FOMACO 2026) has started today and REDUCE has been there, from the Opening ceremony by the Prime Minister of Mauritania, Mr. Mokhtar Ould Diay, until the diferent Side Events and Workshops.
