UNESCO’s International Decade of Culture for Sustainable Development (2027–2036) is a powerful recognition: culture belongs at the heart of development. Now comes the real test—action, investment and accountability. Culture is infrastructure for resilient, inclusive and peaceful societies.

Behind these figures are communities whose heritage has endured conflict, loss and neglect. Recovery must include their cultural memory, sacred spaces and traditions. We call on partners to support community-led recovery and help protect what remains before more is lost.

When push comes to shove on restitution, communities act. Years of advocacy can meet political hesitation, institutional delays and bureaucratic barriers. Restitution must not remain a promise—it must deliver justice, dignity and cultural ownership back to the communities.

The evidence speaks for itself. The ruins of the conflict tell a story of heritage under attack. Palaces, sacred spaces and cultural objects cannot wait. We call on international partners to support urgent action to protect Cameroon’s heritage before more is lost.

We continue to raise the alarm: Cameroon’s cultural heritage is under attack in the North West and South West regions. Palaces, sacred sites, cultural objects and living traditions face destruction amid conflict. We call on partners to join us in preventing this irreversible loss.
