🎩 Lincoln’s Famous Brooks Brothers Greatcoat Once Went to Auction 🎩 This newspaper clipping from 1924 reveals the staggering moment the very greatcoat (overcoat) President Abraham Lincoln wore to Ford's Theatre on April 14, 1865, was ostensibly sold at public auction for $6,500.

Few American brands hold a legacy quite like #BrooksBrothers. To celebrate the anniversary of Lincoln’s 200th birthday, its flagship store (346 Madison Ave.) put an incredible replica on display—the greatcoat it crafted for his 2nd inauguration, which he was wearing on April 14, 1865.

I’ve always been fascinated by the "small" details of history that tell a much larger story. 📜 While researching my new book, I found a fascinating contradiction between a 1968 #nytimes article and the firsthand testimony of Dr. Charles Leale.

"#OTD in 1924, the press wires and the Chicago History Museum (formerly the Chicago Historical Society) asked: 'How many coats did Abraham Lincoln wear when he was shot?' My new book, "Lincoln's Frock Coat: The Enduring Mystery of an Assassination Relic," provides the answer: TWO.
