On this day in 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law, protecting the civil rights of individuals with disabilities. It remains important today that we continue to fight for equality for disabled Pennsylvanians across the state.

On this day 250 years ago, our forefathers declared independence from Great Britain and established a nation free of tyranny wherein no king would rule over its people, but rather a democracy would be “of the people, by the people, for the people.”

On this day in 1964, the Civil Rights Act became law. Its aim, to protect the fundamental rights & liberties of all Americans, was achieved by outlawing discrimination & segregation in the United States. We continue this fight today, always standing up for our neighbor regardless of our differences.

This month, we celebrate and support disability identity, promoting inclusion and equal opportunity for disabled Americans, even 36 years after the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

11 years ago today, the Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court decision legalized same-sex marriage nationwide. A landmark victory for love, dignity, & equal protection under the law. The work continues to fight for protections for LGBTQ+ Pennsylvanians against discrimination & hate crimes ✊🏳️‍🌈

On this day in 1865, slavery finally came to an end in the United States. Today, 161 years later, we celebrate abolition and rededicate ourselves to making sure that our country’s painful history is never forgotten or erased.

This month, we remember the countless lives that have been lost due to gun violence. I will continue to advocate for reasonable firearm regulations to protect our communities in Pittsburgh and across the state.
