In selecting another of the churches of the metropolis, to continue the series which we are presenting to our readers, it seems only natural that we should have fixed upon the prominent edifice of St. Clement Danes. The merry peal of its bells almost rung us into the new locality that we have taken up. Full on the right, in fresh and decent order of comeliness, stands our office of the LONDON NEWS, and, when the sun is shining upon it from the opposite heaven, the tall tower of that silent house of God flings its shadow across our windows, and, after a passing cloud has for a moment shrouded the sunshine, comes full upon our presence with an almost startling effect.

The Aberdeen Herring Fishery

ABERDEEN, Tuesday.—The herring fishing at Aberdeen to-day was the largest that has been landed since the season commenced. The whole of the fleet proceeded to the fishing grounds on Monday, and by this afternoon more than one half of them had arrived. These were mostly fishing at a distance from 10 to 20 miles off shore, and landed average shots of from 8 to 10 crans each.

Portland, Aug. 3.-(A)—The MacMillan expedition crossed the Arctic Circle Saturday night. A radiogram received here today, added that the Bowdoin and Sachem had reached Drisko, the objective point in Southern Greenland, and it was planned to start south in a few days, cruising Baffin land and the Labrador coast.

August 1, 1863 – The End Of Morgan’s Career

The pursuit of Morgan has terminated more happily than the most sanguine could have hoped. He and all his officers, and all but a score or so of his four or five thousand men, are now prisoners at Cincinnati. Morgan and the last remnant of his followers, some three hundred, were captured near New Lisbon, Ohio, on Sunday last. The men will be held for exchange, and the officers will be placed in the penitentiary and retained till the rebels release Col Streight and his officers, who were captured on a similar raid at Rome, Georgia.

Tokio, Saturday. General Oku estimates the Russian losses at Ta-shi-chao at 2,000 at least. Immediate withdrawal alone averted greater disaster to the Russians. The fighting round the fortifications on Tai-ping-ling was desperate. It was there that the Japanese sustained the heaviest losses. Their casualties in the entire engagement are estimated at 1,000. The Russian defences were the beat the Japanese have yet encountered.

Last Thursday And Friday Were The Warmest In Many Years In Milford. The Intense hot weather of last Thursday and Friday created havoc in many of the manufacturing plants in Milford, and caused much suffering to the workmen. On Thursday the government thermometer registered 99 degrees and on Friday the high mark was 100 degrees. Both days the humidity was exceedingly high which resulted in almost unbearable heat.

Accident To The Thunder Steamer At Battersea-Bridge

Richmond papers announce the death of Col. Robert G. Shaw, of the fifty-fourth (colored) regiment of Massachusetts, at the assault on Fort Wagner, Charleston harbor, on the 18th inst. The report needsconfirmation. Col. Shaw was the son of Francis Shaw of Boston, and grandson of the well known merchant whose name he bore. He enlisted at the beginning of the war, and served as first lieutenant in the second Massachusetts regiment through all the battles in which that regiment took part.
