Funny way of doing it. You don't mind if I join you? ( Not waiting for an answer: ) No? Good. Don't worry, I'm reading the new Christie. I'll be *silent as the grave*.
I'm meditating.

"No thanks, I have my own," he says, taking a silver cigarette case out of his breast pocket, carved all over with a dizzying, literally dazzling crisscross pattern that caught the light and threw it back at your eyes. In the center was a small, smooth diamond. Engraved within were the letters β.β.
"...Got fire?" He offers up his pack in return, one cigarette sticking out, giving the stranger a quick once-over.
There's no need for that. They're only rich people.
I'd wear a holster or two.
Perhaps. ( Trying to seem less interested. He pauses to take out a cigarette and light up. ) You keep turning up, 'Iris'. If I bring you with me, I'm solving two mysteries at once. What kind of detective would I be if I passed up on the opportunity?
And let me guess, you need a bodyguard?
Funny. I was just about to go to a very evil club.
This isn't date appropriate, this is dressed for evil.
( He says nothing at that, only offering a skeptical glance. )
( she thinks a moment. ) Must be the divine hand of the creator.
"Good," Rathore said, taking it in his stride. "People tend to look a lot more fondly on a brown man asking questions when he's got a sick child with him. Can you ditch the crutch and lean on me?"
The boy frowns at the detectiveβs description β how could he possibly feel something like that? But at his next question, Crutchie stubbornly gathers his courage. He nods, pointing his chin up at an impossible angle, and follows. βRight behind ya, sir!β
( Well, that's a tough one. On the one hand, there's now five or six things on his mental to-do list to do *yesterday*, a detective's work never being done and all. But on the *other hand* . . . Just how often do you get to talk to a girl like this? ) Nothing important.
Nothing! You were saying about a breakthrough?
"Yes, I think I will." Rathore folds up the paper and puts it under his arm. "There's something here. I can feel it on my neck." He strides toward the building. After a few steps, he stops, turns around to Crutchie. "Well? Aren't you coming?"
"Huh...." Crutchie considers the name, then brightens up. "I think I heard Miss Plumber mention that name! Somethin' like Edward Vance. Scoop's just a nickname! I'm pretty sure he works here. You should go in!"
"Let's see . . ." He opens the paper with a flourish, flicking his wrists, the paper rustling in his hands. "Scoop Vance. What kind of a nickname is *Scoop* . . . ? Reporters for you, eh?"
Crutchie does so, checking every so often to make sure the man is following him. He brings him to the offices of The Sun first, stopping at the great stone steps and looking up. βDβyou know who wrote the article?β
