For #FlashbackFriday, it's #MTGinktober 154, "Pick // Transform," starring Rowan, Scholar of Sparks! I notice that as just like with Geralf when drawing Gisa, I find I get roped into having to draw Will when I draw Rowan, but also similarly, we find ways to minimize the duller half of the #MTG duo.

For #TBT, it's #MTGinktober 153, "Pressure // Flashback," starring Killian, Ink Duelist! It's funny, I can't really remember drawing some of these #MTG illustrations, but I can feel a sense-memory about them, and this one was definitely exhaustion. Gotta plan for it with "rest" days like this one.

Back to basics. #Pokemon

Like a new horizon, but there's still some lingering disquiet.

For #FlashbackFriday, it's #MTGinktober 152, "Watch // Day/Night," starring Village Watch! As I suspected, checking my notes, I was quite exhausted by this, 2021's day 8. After the first week is when it starts to hit you. Low energy plus uninspiring prompts make for lackluster #MTG illustrations.

For #TBT, it's #MTGinktober 151, "Fan // Investigate," starring Young Pyromancer, Young Necromancer, and Floodhound! One of the more enjoyable parts about doing these #MTG drawings was finding ways to incorporate real-world news into them, which felt like dusting off my old editorial comics skillz.

This was our JET illustration for August, themed after summer festivals and foods. I am not the most adventurous eater, but one technique I recommend is always carrying chocolate and/or water with you when you know you are going to encounter new foods, that way you have an escape hatch, worst case.

I remember thinking of Zelda while sketching this. Zelda games always kinda felt intimidating...I'm not sure I've ever beaten one. But seeing the art in those manuals was incredibly inspirational, both way back when and now.

Almost there...

For #FlashbackFriday, it's #MTGinktober 150, "Spirit // Decayed," starring Graveborn Muse, Benevolent Geist, and the Decayed Zombie Token. 150 always has a special meaning to me, as it has always felt like a notable accomplishment, being the Mewtwo number. But here it's just random, old #MTG guys.

For #TBT, it's #MTGinktober 149, "Raven // Double-Faced," starring Liliana, Heretical Healer & Hakka, Whispering Raven! Man, yeah, just a lot of bird-based drawings lately, & #MTG illustrations from five years ago are no exception. Anyway, nice to get some horizontal compositions every now & then.

Finally some chillier weather...it felt like it'd never return...already missing it, even.

Drawing a lot of birds lately, and this Liliana illustration kinda kicked off the trend, now that I think about it, though this is of course #MTG themed, rather than random-office themed.

Some lingering bitterness, to be sure.

This was July's JET illustration. Obviously tying in Japan's gift of cherry trees to the US and celebrating the 250th. Man, this was a great joy to study and paint, getting those poses and costumes down, while still keeping it in the mascots' world. But it was quite intense--a lot of detail work.

There's always some lurking, terrible thing.

For #FlashbackFriday, it's #MTGinktober 148, "Knot // Disturb," starring Gisa and Geralf! While Gisa's probably my favorite #MTG character to draw, Geralf has got to be one of my least favorite. His doofy monocle might be the most annoying thing about him. Anyway, nice to get some vengeance here.

Peter Cullen was a kind of soundtrack of my youth, a creative anchor and foundation that I still hold dearly. Like music does so well, his narration captured a moment. What a loss. But I will always cherish his memory and the inspiration and imagination he ignited. www.youtube.com/watch?v=lK3D...

For #TBT, it's #MTGinktober 147, "Vessel // Pumpkin," starring Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain and Weatherlight! One reason this was a tough year in drawing #MTG was cuz I wanted to scale back, so I drew a lot smaller than usual, but it just made each illustration feel so much more cramped and clunky.

Sometimes I have no idea why I name my files what I name them. This one's called Dunkey. I have to guess I was listening to Kool AD at the time.

Rooting for the good ol' hat.

Doughnuts would be nice.

I noticed I have a bunch of copies of this file cuz it was from when it was randomly not posting images for some reason and I tried renaming it and reformatting it to no avail, but then never got around to deleting all the extras...

I went through a stretch of several years where I only ever drew in ballpoint pen when drawing lines, apart from Inktober prep-lines in October, and that was also when I dove into Copic markers, too. I still do my daily studies in pen to this day, though I guess I mainly just draw digitally anyway.
