4 August 1914 Manchester Babies Hospital opened (later, Duchess of York Hospital), founded by Dr Catherine Chisholm, first female medical graduate of Manchester Univ, with financial help from Margaret Ashton, Manchester’s first female councillor. The hospital initially employed only female doctors.
3 August 1887 To build the Manchester Ship Canal, the Bridgewater Navigation Company (including Bridgewater Canal) was purchased, with the largest cheque ever written at that time. The amount of £1,710,000 was fixed by an Act of Parliament.

2 August 1873 It was reported that a Salford man had been given a month’s hard labour for stealing boots from his girlfriend’s feet. They had been drinking together in a pub on Chapel Street when he took the boots to pawn them.

This week in 1876 Manchester fairs were abolished by order of the Home Secretary. They included Knott Mill Fair along Deansgate /Liverpool Rd, described by @theguardian.com as showing ‘glaring evil on every side’ with ‘brutality, roguery, and every other phase of human degradation’.

30 July 1746 Manchester rebels who had supported Bonnie Prince Charlie were executed. The heads of Deacon and Syddall were brought back to Manchester and displayed on spikes at the Exchange. The heads were later stolen and buried by a medical student.

27 July 1844 John Dalton died in Manchester. Father of atomic theory, he also worked on colour blindness, sometimes referred to as Daltonism. He wanted his (incorrect) theory on colourblindness tested on his eyes after death, and his eyes are now kept @sim-manchester.bsky.social.

This week in 1870 a letter to a Salford paper reported ‘youths in a state of nudity’ being chased by police through the streets, after trying to bathe in the canal. The letter proposed a cheap outdoor public bath instead, for 200 youths at a time. In winter it could be a skating rink.

23 July 1990 The Hacienda, Manchester, was granted until January 1991 to address drug problems in the club, after which the club’s licence was renewed. The club was represented by George Carman QC who had defended Jeremy Thorpe MP and Ken Dodd.
