#OTD in 1965, the Voting Rights Act was signed into law, opening the doors of democracy to millions of eligible voters. Its promise is simple: every eligible voter deserves to cast a ballot and have it counted free from discrimination, intimidation, or violence.

I share your disappointment, but the struggle continues. I will continue to fight along side you for this important legislation. Let's remember the generations of struggle & sacrifice which led to the Voting Rights Act of 1965 & remain committed to protecting voting rights for Rhode Islanders. 🗳 🇺🇸 ✊🏽

"It would have sent a message — particularly to Black voters in Rhode Island that no longer enjoy the protection of the federal Voting Rights Act — that the legislature is willing to step up and protect their rights.” - Common Cause RI Executive Director John Marion

What is the Rhode Island Voting Rights Act, and why is it so important to pass the bill this session? In this video, three voting rights champions - Secretary of State Gregg Amore, House Majority Leader Katherine Kazarian, and Senate President Val Lawson - answer those questions!

We're calling on legislators in both chambers of the Rhode Island General Assembly to bring the RI Voting Rights Act to the floor with all ten amendments supported by our broad coalition! Contact your state lawmakers and ask them to advance the RI VRA (H-8334/S-3143) without delay.
