This is a reminder to not let the questions of "was it an ABUSIVE relationship, though?" or "was it really TRAUMATIC, though?" distract you from doing what you need to do w/ your self talk, mental focus, & physiology to heal your wounds & make recovery supporting choices today.

A church or spiritual group doesn't have to be an extreme cult to harm people psychologically, any more than a painful relationship has to be cinematically abusive to do damage. Whatever hurt you, hurt you. This isn't a competition. There is no minimum "bar" for pain or trauma.

Dolly Parton was an incredible human being. Her efforts to promote children's literacy, driving economic growth in her home state of Tennessee, and her open acceptance of the LGBTQ community meant so much to so many people. Fly high Dolly ๐Ÿ’™

In my experience, realistic trauma recovery asks us to limit our exposure to people who are hell bent on fighting for their right to be miserable or hopeless. Let them do their thing, w/ respect & love-- but their thing doesn't have to be our thing.

I say take your trauma recovery skills & tools-- self talk, mental focus, & physiology-- as seriously as your heart medicine or chemotherapy. CPTSD & depression are killer diseases if left unchecked-- & they will sneakily try to convince us to just let them do their thing.

Your brain is not trying to be a dick w/ the anxiety. It's trying to avoid danger & "failure." It needs reassurance, not shame-- a supportive, realistic coach, not a drill sergeant. "Self talk" may sound simplistic or superficial, but the tone & words we use w/ ourselves matter.

Having been abused or neglected was not our fault. We did not "choose" that. The choices we make in trauma recovery are how we repair that damage & realistically build a life worth waking up to every day-- but that doesn't imply we were or are hurting due to "wrong" past choices.
