Thought with the new version of the Bluesky Android app it might finally be usable, but nope (This post brought to you by a thread I had typed out that it ate whole when I had the audacity to open another app.)

An interesting data point (that didn't make it into my story): since it blocked Utah IP addresses in protest of the legislature's laws? Pornhub records only 2,100 visitors a month from what it believes are from Utah. Unknown if those are VPN or whatever: www.fox13now.com/news/politic... #utpol #Utah

I made a @pckt.blog version of my post about why @bsky.app might think you're in a location that requires age verification when you're not. ricci.pckt.blog/calgary-texa...

You thought it was Trump that wanted to annex Canada into the US, but no, it was Bluesky (yes, I know why this happens, will write up a thread later for the benefit of anyone who doesn't)

Next summer, I'll be hosting ACM REP, the Conference on Reproducibility and Replicability on the campus of the University of Utah! It's a great venue for publishing work on reproducibility in CS, and it's a terrific community. Papers likely due late spring, conference in July acm-rep.github.io

Interesting, there are 17 accounts out there that are *not* on Bluesky PDSes, but have at least one of Bluesky's rotation keys still attached to their did:plc records 🤔

Using my fresh new PLC replica to look around at some migration numbers. For accounts with did:plc, there have been 21,770 migrations to date, 90% of those were off of Bluesky PDSes, 9% were between two indie PDSes, and 1% were indie to Bluesky.
Muting reposts and/or quoteposts is close, hope to land soon 🙏

Interesting, one of @leaflet.pub's Atmosphere Field Reporters, announced today, seems to have had their account nuked by @bsky.app - this also took down their Leaflet posts. Are folks sure they want all their eggs in the Bluesky basket? lab.leaflet.pub/3mquhjtnhcc2...

That's about 2/3 the annual National Science Foundation budget.
RFK Jr. asked the National Institute of Health to dedicate $5 billion (!) to finding a link between vaccines and autism. "That would have dedicated more than a tenth of the NIH’s annual budget to investigating a hypothesis already refuted by scientists worldwide."
If we counted correctly, that's 12 papers at OSDI 2026 that present experiments or other evaluations performed with CloudLab. 👍 Check out CloudLab for yourself: www.cloudlab.us

I finally added an oft-requested feature to arewedecentralizedyet.online , my project to track statistics for the atmosphere and other Internet infrastructure. it now includes history for the Shannon Index, showing how decentralization has evolved over the time I've been collecting data.

Today the good people of the world commemorate the passing of Google Reader thirteen short years ago on July 1, 2013. To honor their memory (and in lieu of flowers) please add an RSS/Atom/JSON feed to your web site and keep building a web that connects people in meaningful and positive ways.
the thing that annoys me the most about the “we’d never do things like train our AI on your content” messaging is that it’s completely misleading if anything, bluesky makes it easy for ANYONE to train AI on your content. it fights monopolies by democratizing access to public data, not by abstaining
