son biten’s gimmick of being a fake sun wukong is fine, but i feel like they could have done more with her character what if instead of a monkey she was a gorilla? she could be super smart and from the moon, with a short range toggle tesla cannon, and a dome shield to counter aoe slop
Personally, I think that what's thematically appropriate may not necessarily be the most interesting approach. One direction for her design is to make her into an intelligent gorilla from the moon. Perhaps wielding a tesla cannon and a dome shield to deal with projectiles.
So it seems that instead of focusing on her level of attractiveness, ZUN decided to depict her ugliness through giving her a very asymmetrical design. What do you think about this approach? does it work thematically? Or does the it not justify the lack of aesthetic symmetry?
Iwanagahime, the goddess Ariya is based on, was said to have been very ugly in mythology, which is also repeated in Touhou. In fact, Reimu notably comments on Ariya's appearance in one of her routes.
While her bottom half are symmetrical in design, her skirt is slanted diagonally, her tail juts out to one side, and she also has one leg folded and one leg straight. As for what this all means, it's very likely to depict her supposed "ugly" appearance.

We've already seen it. In Reimu's ending with Kanako, Kanako flashes back to Yuiman pre-brainwashing. She looks more or less the same minus the snake. This ending is also where we learn she hunts deer by chucking arrows instead of using a bow.
