Lightly smoked, which was always the way with Norwegian (herring) sardines, Sild No 1 salad for lunch today! Hurrah! (Thanks to my good friend Liz Beech, who picked these up somewhere in the Lake District).

errings in at Lindsay’s in Newcastle’s Grainger Market today. Hurrah!
My good friend Ian Ground sends me a photo of this menu from Denmark. Bliss it was in that restaurant to be alive!
There was, of course, a hidden reference to herrings in the team encouragement of Norway’s fans…
Nashe didn’t rate the Harveys (sorry, literary joke) but it was great to meet up with the Thomas Nashe Project’s Andrew Hadfield at the Lewes Arms where it’s always beautiful, discussing the beauty of Nashes Lenten Stuffe and the Red Herring Joke which runs through it. Hurrah!
Ryszard Kaja’s Wódka - I’m not really a vodka drinker, but I could be persuaded by posters like this…
I’ve just finished a full translation of Neucrantz’s On Herrings (1654) - all but one or two of the 115 writers and 174 texts he references traced and footnoted… I’m going to get it looked over by someone who can actually read Renaissance Latin, but, nevertheless, hurrah!

What to do when a friend brings you a dinky little dried herring from Japan and you happen to have a dinky little fresh herring in the freezer… Has to be a sushi-rollmop roll-off!
A friend brings me nishin - dried herring - from Japan. Hurrah!
Good to meet up with the great Mike Smylie once more. Ullapool’s Lugger Fest is a tip top event - and I got to eat one of Mike’s truly excellent kippers. As the cap says Make Herrings Great Again!
Gosh, but I’m looking forward to being at Ullapool’s Lugger Fest this weekend! So many beautiful boats, so many lovers of the herring - including the great Mike Smilie (whose mobile smokehouse kippers I might even get to try this time…). www.luggerfest.wordpress.com
Looking forward to Monday’s event at Taigh Chearsabhagh in Lochmaddy - I think it’s the first time I’ve been introduced in Gaelic! Hurrah! Or maybe, Cabhaig!
Herrings declare independence. ‘Yes, we talk through our arses,’ they farted, ‘but we’d just like to register our disappointment.’
Rigby’s Encyclopaedia of the Herring: The Highlands & Islands Tour! All right, a couple of gigs, but what gigs! I could be rubbish and you’d still be glad you came! Sat 23 May, 2.45pm, Lugger Fest, Ullapool; Mon 25 May, 7pm, Taigh Chearsabhagh, Lochmaddy, North Uist. Hurrah!
All I want is a proper cup coffee, made in a proper copper coffee pot… Every time I hear (or sing) the song, I think of this coffee pot. And as a kid, before I’d heard the song, every time I thought about Aladdin…
A tasty-looking rye & spelt loaf if I say so myself… if only I’d pickled some herrings when I had the chance…
Newcastle’s great gift to humanity - the prospects of any day are improved with a kipper for breakfast! Hurrah!

Look what I’ve got! The out-today paperback of This Allotment, edited by Sarah Rigby and published by the excellent Elliott & Thompson. It includes a couple of the Newcastle Allotments interviews I did, working with my good friend the photographer Peter Fryer back in the days when I had more hair…
TOXIC HERRING SHOCK! Plankton-eating Spring herring in the North Sea reveal dangerously high accumulations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) reports respected French fishery science journal, Poison d’Avril.
Great stuff from @rachkelly_designs and Newcastle College’s @paperjam_ncl - herrings with legs! There are Sumerian and C15th/16th English precedents, trust me… and the hope inherent in a new generation of herringists…
Herring in oatmeal fried with bacon, served with cabbage, caraway & lentils and a mustard sauce, hurrah!
Fresh herrings at Lindsay’s on Thursday, great Opera North production of Peter Grimes at the Theatre Royal last night… Could’ve built a Newcastle Herring Festival round that… KipperFest: a Celebration of the Toon’s Greatest Gift to Mankind! How about it Newcastle City Council?
Hurrah! Get yourselves down to Lindsay’s in Newcastle’s Grainger Market while stocks last!
