I’m teaching a graduate seminar on families for the first time in years. What are your favorite recent or forthcoming academic books on family life that I should teach? Self promotion encouraged!

The field of gender and sexual minority (LGBTQ) health is being erased. Hundreds of ongoing NIH grants being immediately terminated. Deb Umberson and my decade long longitudinal study on marriage and health joined the termination list last night.

My federal grants with @wendymanning.bsky.social and Ann Meier were terminated last week. The language from the termination is below. It has been sad as we are being forced to say goodbye to members of our team. We are figuring out next steps. We remain deeply committed to studying all families.

Just learned my team’s NIA R01 on LGBTQ health that was set to be reviewed today was dropped from the study section last minute. Heard several other LGBTQ grants had the same fate.

Reminder that ipums.org has all the acs, census, CPS, NHIS, MEPS, and so much more. Bonus that it’s cleaned and harmonized in ways that make these data really easy to use in practice.

For 20 years I have used data from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey to educate many thousands of students about trends in teen sexual behavior. Now, because Trump and MAGA are afraid of knowledge and education, access to this information -- vital knowledge -- is denied the public. (From my textbook:

Social scientists are actually excellent at how to successfully share data with each other. We're going to need organize, and actively seek to help each, to ensure ongoing access to data.

The CDC’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey has monitored the wellbeing of America’s high school students since 1991. Since 2015, it’s been a vital source of data on LGBQ youth. In 2023, it provided the first ever nationally representative sample of transgender teens. As of this morning, it’s gone.

Wake up y’all. *Take normal things away to create shock. Then, give a little back so it seems reasonable and normal is THE playbook.* The media needs to do better. THIS IS NOT OK.

To instrumentalize what my sister is saying below: every time someone says DEI say “you mean civil rights?” Every time someone says they are against woke reply “oh so you’re a segregationist!” Words have meaning! Don’t allow that nonsense to stand.

Only saying once on bsky b/c I know it is not entirely useful, but it is totally exhausting that in 2016 some of us said “they’re Nazis,” some of us screamed “they’re segregationists,” and a whole lot of very serious people now posting about them being Nazis and segregationists gaslight us for years

All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.

Finally done done DONE with Twitter and deactivated. Not only is it an unusable dumpster fire, but elon’s n@zi salute made this decision for me. Hi Bluesky friends!
